The Salty Dogs Jazz Band has been going strong since 1947. That''s sixty-one years! We have in this unreleased 1955 live performance the famous clarinetest and violinist, Darnell Howard. Darnell has played with King Oliver, Earl ''Fatha'' Hines,Bob Scobey''s Frisco Band, and many others. This is a rare and classic recording.
The co-founder of the Salty Dogs, Birch Smith is on cornet The late Jim Snyder plays trombone. John Cooper-piano(and still playing with the current 2008 Original Salty Dogs). On banjo we have Jack Lord(also responsible for the cover photo), Bob Rann-tuba, and Dick Karner on drums. At the time this recording was made, the average age of all the players was 19, with Darnell being the one exception. All these players took this music serious, as their performance will show you.
