Kate Callahan stands on stage with her Martin guitar. Under the lights she is a melding of reds, purples, pinks and blues. It is her red hair and the richness of her voice that casts this glow. Kate prefers to abandon the flat pick and pull every note with her fingers. In a soulful, modern way, Kate reminds us where the roots of acoustic songwriting come from.
This 26 yea -old''s presence on the east coast folk circuit has garnered her The Hartford Advocate''s "Best Solo Performer of 2002" award. She has opened concerts for Judi Collins, Claudia Schmidt, Erica Wheeler, Priscilla Herdman, and Bill Morrissey and was invited to spend five months with acoustic legends Aztec Two-Step to finish out their 2001 tour.
Kate performed at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (Hillsdale, NY) where she was chosen to showcase in the "Emerging Artists''" category.
Callahan''s "Influence of Red" album crosses genres, with frequent folk, pop and jazz air-play. Notably, "Red" was voted the #2 best album of 2000 at WERU 102.9 Blue Hill, Maine. Kate''s song "Good Time" was the number one most requested song on the waves at KANM Texas A&M University in April of 2002 and has been discovered and reviewed in newspapers across the country.
Critic Steve Metcalf muses, "The Influence of Red calls to mind the middle period albums of Joni Mitchell, the time of Court and Spark or Hissing of Summer Lawns. In addition to touring the folk circuit Kate has developed and Artist-in-Residence program that she takes into the classrooms of public and private schools.
