We at the Baboon Torture Division feel that recent developments in home music production represent the most important and exciting chapter in the entire history of music. We believe that electronic music, as an artform, is still in its infancy, and as the tools become accessible to the common home computer user, and the number of producers grows exponentially, the art will transform, and indeed, the entire music industry will transform.
Baboon Torture Division is dedicated to advancing the art of home brewed recordings and to making new kinds of sounds, and pushing the limits of electronic music as a genre.
There is stigma surrounding the term electronic music. In the minds of your typical music consumer, ''electronic music'' represents a very specific type of music associated with repetative, disco influenced fluff made to meet the
demands of teeniebobbers and recreational booty shakers. What electronic music is quickly evolving into, is equivilant to an artist''s toolkit, allowing for the creation and exploration of a vast array of musical forms. It is now within the reach of anyone with a few thousand dollars to purchase software and hardware enabling them to produce music of a quality which only 10 years previously would have been cost-prohibitive to all but the elite.
But more than this, Baboon Torture Division is all about having fun. We want to keep our sonic voyages into the unkonown light hearted and entertaining for audiences witnessing us.
This project, The Mud, The Blood, And The Beer, is in keeping with this spirit. If you are new to the Baboon Torture Division, you may not appreciate the irony of a Baboon Torture Division country album. This is not to say that the songs on this album have been made ''funny'' because they haven''t. In fact, the complete opposite is true. We wanted to evoke a feeling that was both epic and tragic through the whole album. We succeeded in that respect some degree, although there are a number of ''wacky'' moments. We consider this album the be both a stylistic triumph and a technical one.
When we started the album, our software was archaic, but the idea was a good one. Progress was slow, but the results were incredible. The bar was set high early on. Ring of Fire and Cowboy Song were the first tracks completed, and we knew we had something special. The outlines for Convoy and Wedding Bells were ambitious to say the least. At that point, (the Use Your Illusion 3 era) we ''built'' songs with a program called Gold Wave, a linear 2 track audio editor. Using a calculator was essential, and huge numbers of mixdowns had to be made in order to construct the final track. Keeping the many layers of guitar, vocals, and MIDI in sync was becoming a real problem. The project went on the backburner when we started doing the rock operas and video shows. During this time, we began using Ableton, and delighting in the realms it opened to us. Baboon Torture Division''s Greatest Hits is essentially the highlights of our efforts to become comfortable with the software. Once BTD''sGH was complete, we wanted to take our show on the road. Many stumbling blocks lay in our path as we forged ahead into the world of live music. Steve Biloba''s constant insistence on using a laptop for all guitar effects, soft synths, drum machines, and vocal processing made things difficult. The computer was unreliable, the hardware was buggy, and vocals never quite penetrated the mask. Any other band would have tossed the laptop in the trash and bought effects pedals. But Baboon Torture Division are visionaries. With a lot of dedication, a lot of practice, and a lot of out of the box thinking, we streamlined the live setup with the help of our invention, ''the audio buddy'' which allowed us to basically run our whole recording studio on stage from a laptop.
With these obstacles out of the way, we could focus on the neglected country project.
With our new setup, completing the album was a breeze, the only real difficulty being the task of sorting through hundreds of files recorded 2-5 years earlier. Now that this album is finished and available to random internet surfers, we feel like we can move out of the old west, and into the future. We hope you enjoy the fruits of our labor, and we look forward to providing you with more audio adventures in the future.
