Isaiah 42:10 tells us to sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. The gospel ensemble, Unison is executing that perfectly as they explode into the gospel music arena with their debut release, “Unison Gospel Revolution.”

The group consist of seven members which include Jonathan Brown (tenor) and Sharon King (soprano), both of Savannah, GA, Courtney Durham (soprano, alto) of Atlanta, GA, Linda Kennedy-McGahee (alto) of Cobbtown, GA, Tjuan Styles-Nelson (alto, contralto) of Spartanburg, SC, Coffey Harris-Sparks (alto, contralto) of Winston-Salem, NC, and Ursula “DeeDee” Tucker (soprano) of Charlotte, NC. All being members of the same church (The United House of Prayer), this union of talent came together after the first four years of being organized and has continued to strive for excellence ever since. Functioning as Unison and as individuals, they have been actively involved in their church and community outreach, inspiring the lives of others, while reaching for higher heights in their ministry.

Unison was organized in 2004 by Jonathan Brown (musician, producer, songwriter, vocalist), with a vision of uniting a group of gifted, kingdom-minded musicians on one accord to do a greater work for God. The name itself symbolizes being on one accord, in harmony in all aspects of their walk, like the holy trinity. The word says, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Unison is certain that God is with them and that he rewards those who diligently seek him. Though the faces have changed throughout the years, the entity that you see today represents the same concord.

In June of 2008, Unison decided that it was time to share their gift abroad by releasing their first album. With award-winning writers, Tjuan Nelson and Jonathan Brown (producer, musician) already on board, the project came together in just a few days. It was only a plus that Jonathan heads up Genesis Entertainment (Independent Atlanta-based label) and the agreement to record a full was set in stone instantly without question. In a matter of a month, Unison was able to record a full album and release in late August of 2008.

With such inspiration by artists like Kim Burrell, The Clark Sisters, Kirk Franklin, and many others, Unison’s album, “Unison Gospel Revolution” prominently displays the group’s versatility and vocal abilities. It incorporates sounds of traditional gospel music, New Orleans big band, swing-time jazz, urban contemporary, with an expressive mix of R&B. Jonathan explains, “As a unit, we possess diverse styles, essence, and qualities that make us who we are.” With this said, each member brings something different to the feast that we all indulge in.
Ultimately, Unison’s primary goal is to touch and inspire all nations through their music, regardless of age, gender, or race. Jonathan proclaims, “We want to destroy yokes, save souls, heal in song, and deliver from captivity.” Unison has truly overcome many obstacles, but has remained faithful to their calling to take the message of Jesus Christ to the world, whether together or individually. Once you have listened to their psalms and seen them you will recognize why their name speaks for itself.

Now is the time for the world to get acquainted with Unison, because they are speaking life through their melodies and psalms. And with such angelic voices, it’s a wonder why God hasn’t already called them to headline in heaven.
