“Spirit of the Mountains”

For over 200 years the sound of fiddles, banjos, dulcimers, and voices has echoed through the hills and hollows of the southern Appalachians. Carried in the hearts and voices of the early Scots Irish settlers of the region, this rich and ancient heritage of ballads, love songs, hymns, and fiddle and dance tunes took on new life and flourished in the isolated and fertile ground of the southern mountains. Hardly a day would pass on many family homesteads when the sound of singing or instruments could not be heard behind the plow, sitting at the spinning wheel, gathered on the porch of an evening, or accompanying the spirited circle and running square dances of the region.

Even in our “modern” world this music continues to be shared as it has been in the past, as an informal and spontaneous expression of life. Join us now as friends gather on the “front porch” to celebrate the joy and the spirit of the music, and the mountains from which it flows.”

Fiddle, banjo, mountain dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, autoharp, and guitar were used on this recording. To capture the spirit of the music, the recording was done with all four musicians in one room, listening to and playing off each other as has been done for hundreds of years. And to create the “live” sound heard in authentic mountain music, there were no double tracks or dubbing used in the recording process.

“Spirit of the Mountains” is the title of this recording, and the name of the group of four musician friends who collaborated on this project. Having played together in living rooms, on porches, and at festivals over the years, these friends decided to combine their talents and love for the music to make this recording. Jeff and Janet Furman have been playing old-time music together for 30 years. Both award-winning musicians, they have played on multiple recordings of traditional American and Celtic music. Their love for the music and each other is easily seen and heard in their performances. As warm and effective teachers, Jeff and Janet have both been on the faculty and performed concerts at numerous music festivals and workshops across the country. Anne and Rob Lough have been making music together formally and informally for over 40 years. Nationally known for her teaching and performing skills on the mountain and hammered dulcimer, Anne also shares her love and knowledge of traditional music, dance and folklore in schools and educational venues throughout the country.
As “Spirit of the Mountains”, Anne, Rob, Jeff, and Janet hope the music gets your toes tappin’, carries you away to a special place in the mountains, and touches your heart.”
