Squirrelhouse began as a sloppy three piece garage rock band in the winter of 2007, but after frequent line-up changes and many different experiments with its sound, settled on the 6-piece it is today--dual guitars, bass, drums, dual vocals, and French horn. Driven by a local music scene that demands engaging, energetic performances, Squirrelhouse hsa developed a catchy sound that along with darkly nuanced lyrics demands repeat listens. With songs full of clever hooks and epic crescendos, there''s never a dull moment in any song.
Each member comes from a distinctive musical background. Russell has spent many years playing stand-up bass in jazz and orchestral ensembles. Sarah honed her vocals in musical theater. Clay brings his love of progressive music and highly-technical metal to the group. Beth brings her years of classical training and vast knowledge of classical music. Paul came to Squirrelhouse after spending two years creating experimental trip-hop and ambient computer-based music. And Patrick, who has played guitar since he was a kid, brings his love of complex guitar lines to the mix.
Their debut album, SPQR, was recorded and mixed at Old Capitol Recordings in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with Shane Lollar who has worked with The Dexateens and Jeffrey Evans among others. The album was mastered at Lacquer Channel Studios in Toronto by Noah Mintz who has also mastered albums for Broken Social Scene and Feist as well as many others.
