Starting out in a little town in southwest Missouri called Rocky Comfort, Kenny Ray picked up the banjo at the age of 6 and continued from there. His addiction to the applause kept him working hard to get better. Kenny Ray picked up the guitar a couple of years later and, along with his love of writing poetry, he decided to put the two together, not realizing that the end result was songwriting.
Fast forward to a few years later, in 1993 Kenny Ray made the move to Nashville, TN. With a very diverse background of music under his belt, his raw talent in songwriting, and a powerful voice, he hit the streets of Music Row. You could say hit literally, because the frustration of getting turned down left and right could get to a person. Finally, after months of walking Music Row, Shelby Kennedy at ASCAP made a phone call to a friend of his,a publisher for Oh Boy Records, Janey West. That phone call changed everything!
Janey had been looking for a fresh face with great talent and songwriting ability, and after meeting Kenny Ray at the Oh Boy studios in Nashvillle and hearing him sing his material live, she was convinced that he was the one. It felt like forever, but the attourney''s finally got the ink to dry on the contracts and 12 days after signing his first real publishing deal, Kenny Ray made good on his promise to write songs for Oh Boy that would get recorded.
Kenny Ray got started in the circles of country music and had been introduced him to producer and songwriter Brent Maher. Brent, for those who do not know, found the Judds and other name acts and has been the writer of many great songs. Brent told Kenny Ray one thing that stuck with him, he said "Kenny, if you ever have a song that you think is worth hearing, I''d like to hear it."
It had been over a year since Kenny Ray had heard those words. In the meantime, Janey West had hooked Kenny Ray up with veteran writer and keyboardist, John Jarvis. Kenny Ray had a song idea to add a new character to the nativity scene at Christmas-time, a soldier. (This was long before Kenny Ray went into the Navy.) John took the idea and ran with it. Faxing back and forth lyric possibilities, they finally hit the right feel and named it ''A Soldiers King''. When Kenny Ray got the demo version from John, he remembered what Brent Maher had told him and walked it over to Brent''s new record label, Magnatone Records.
Kenny Ray reminded Brent of the conversation and Brent said, "It took you long enough." Brent said he would be happy to listen to it, so Kenny Ray though, "OK, he''ll get to it when he can." Little did Kenny Ray know, he popped it in right there and before Kenny Ray could walk back to Oh Boy Records, Brent had called Janey West and put the song on hold (Meaning, they wanted it!) for of all people, one of Kenny Ray''s heros, Kenny Rogers.
Kenny Ray understood that in Nashville, things aren''t always what they seemed, so though he was excited about the news, he was a bit skeptical, until a few mornings later. Kenny Ray was eating breakfast and watching the news before he went in to his writing appointments for the day. The phone rang and it was Janey West asking if he was watching TV. He said he was and Janey told him what channel to turn to. Kenny Ray changed the channel and in the excitement of what he saw, the cereal somehow was on the ceiling, orange juice on the front door and the toast wasn''t found until the next Sunday''s cleaning. The excitement was caused by Kenny Rogers singing Kenny Ray''s and John Jarvis'' song on national television, The 700 Club. What a feeling!!!
Kenny Ray went on to make other friends in Nashville such as artists like Blake Shelton, Michael Peterson, Chad Brock, John Berry, Tom Wurth and Jamey Garner. The co-writers list could go on for days with names like Jeff Silbar (Wind Beneath My Wings), Buddy Brock, Bart Butler, Bruce Gaitsch and many others.
An unexpected move for Kenny Ray came in the form of joining the Navy. He had always wanted to serve, but the music dream had held him tight. With the success he had achieved in Nashville, Kenny Ray felt it was time to move on. He joined the Navy in December of 2000 as an Electronic Technician, but when the Navy found out he could sing, the change was made and he became a United States Navy Vocalist.
Kenny Ray is now serving in the Navy and continues to write songs about what he feels. He is actually one of the very few songwriters of his kind in the Navy. He feels that people just want to be moved with situations that are real and ones they can understand. "I think people want to listen to a song and realize that someone else understands them and how they might be feeling at that moment", says Kenny Ray.
If you have a patriotic bone in your body, daydreamed with your feet in the sand, or looked down a train track that disappeared into the distance and wondered where it might go, you will enjoy this well-crafted album. It truly comes from the heart of a writer who understands his audience and knows how to share his thoughts and feeling with them.
