Keith Thompson is house music''s unpredictable, one man show who brought us hits like "Break 4 Love"(now included in the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas), "Can''t Take It", and "The Rhythm Of Life." This album contains his favorites from 1988 until 1998 (with the exception of the 2003 "It''s On" remix by Mateo & Matos) who''s remixes he liked so much he combined them just to give you a taste of their funkiness. Keith began as radio deejay in college (N.Y Institute Of Technology) and then professionally on 105.9 FM WNWK in New York. He moved on to become a singer-songwriter who made his name in the house music genre. Thompson made his debut with the release, "Everywhere I Go" in 1986 on his first label, Flat Records. He later joined the concept group, Raze, lending sultry vocals to "Caught You Cheating"(Groove St.,1987) and the historic, erotic anthem, "Break 4 Love" (Columbia 1988) which was number 1 both in the U.S. and international club charts. A minimalist, hypnotic groove that was an instant classic from its first release, "Break 4 Love" in its English and Spanish versions especially, has seduced people from the club underground to pop radio, becoming an acknowledged worldwide classic club anthem. This was soon followed by his solo effort, "Love Is Not A Toy"(Hit-N-Run 1988) which became a club hit in N.Y.C and later in London via then pirate radio station, Kiss FM. His next offering came after being signed to Capitol US, in the form of the ground breaking "Can''t Take It" (1989) and was featured on the now classic, Black Havana album. Later released as a single on Capitol, it is likely the first ragga/house fusion, which he at the time referred to as "ragamuffin-house". The single rose to number 1 on DMA charts in Italy, 6 in Sweden, and top 40 on the US billboard dance charts. He has toured the U.K., Europe, Japan, and the U.S. from 1988 until the present.
In 1991 Keith was signed by Capitol''s parent company EMI Records and began working on his debut album, which due to staff shakeups within the company, was never released. Despite this setback, the material intended for the album was later released on his own label, Level 10 Music Works. The label''s debut single, "Believe" (distributed by Emotive 1992) was produced by Justin Strauss with keyboards by Eric Kupper. It began the series of releases and tours of the U.K and Europe. "Believe" became a big favorite on N.Y.C''s radio WBLS''s midday mix by John Robinson. Then came the gem, "Rhythm Of Life" (1993).
Released as the Keith Thompson Project, it boasted a production cast of such luminaries as Little Louie Vega & Kenny Dope Gonzales (in their first incarnation as Masters At Work), Todd Terry, India, Larry Rausen,Connie Harvey, Debbie Cole, and Tony Humphries with Tuta Aquino as producers. Instantly massive on acetate and DAT, with club play by Paul Oakenfold and other top DJs, the song created a storm of interest in underground clubs worldwide for a year prior to its release. Unfortunately, it only reached the top 30 on most charts due to its late release. It is slated for re-release this fall of 2002 with remixes by UBP and John Nick on Underground Solution. By the summer of 1994, Thompson was back in the limelight again through the UK no. 1 dance chart return of the remixes of "Break 4 Love" (Champion UK). He relocated to London and began collaborating with producer Marshall Jefferson among others. They produced "Far Behind" (Hott 1994) under the moniker Idle & Wild. The pair also released "Catch A Groove" (4 Liberty 1995) an EP under the name Marshall''s Party featuring Killa T. While performing live ad libs on Paul ''Trouble'' Anderson''s Kiss FM radio show, he was tagged with that Killa Thompson moniker.
Keith released "Che Life" (4 Liberty ''95) under the production name Afrikan Opera. His collaboration with Joe T. Vannelli created "Don''t Hold Back" (Dream Beat 1995) and with the North Side Production they produced "Not Enough Loving" (4 Liberty 1996), an unappreciated future classic that is being considered for reissue.
From ''96 through ''97, he took a break from performing and producing to take classes in computer programming, website designing, completed his B.S. degree in Communications. As he says, " I got myself a life outside of music, restructured my priorities and my business. I''ve become the person I wanted to be, so I can be the artist I need to be." Thompson set up a professional quality studio at home, "Thanks to modern technology," he says, "I can put down my ideas and experiment without worrying about time and budget running out."
