Since the days of his youth Master Drummer, Sulaiman (Kutay) Turay dreamed of teaching the world the importance and value of preserving it''s culture. For him it was through the talking drums of the Motherland,
Africa.
A native of Sierra Leone, Turay will finally realize his dream by debuting his compact disc entitled, "Wan Pot." Incorporating a mixture of traditional and contemporary selections, Turay teamed with other local artist to infuse African Rhythms with western hip-hop. This project provides a rich blend of musicianship a politically conscience lyrics that grips the mature listener, while remaining provocatively alluring to today''s generation. Drumming since the age of 5, Turay pulls out all the stops for "Wan Pot." He digs deep and relies upon the wisdom & skills of other visionaries to make this a workmanship that commands attention.

As servant to the local community, Turay has generated support through teaching workshops and drum classes as well as serving as advisor, consultant and cultural historian. "This project has come with great support from people with incredible talent. From the vocals to the mixing, it has been like a family project where we each put our hands into this, WAN POT."
As executive producer, composer, musician and vocalist Turay has created a project to make both the ancestors and contemporaries proud!
"Won Pot" debuts Friday, April 29, 2005 at the Carter G. Woodson School 1605 Donald Lee Pkwy Atlanta. The evening''s event is in celebration of Sierra Leone''s 44th National Liberation Day but serves to honor all African countries and her descendents. The theme, "AFRIKA UNITE" is a reminder to all people of African descent that we are one, and we are viable to this world.


About The Artist

Sulaiman Turay affectionately known as ''Kutay'' came to the shores of America with the Fritong Players a professional theatre company in Sierra Leone. The group came to perform at the National Black Arts Festival in 1992. The company''s repertoire included acapello singing, acting, dancing and drumming. Upon realizing the need for continuity, and in response to the demand from African parentage, African Americans, and the entire community, Kutay was inspired to dedicate his life to sharing the skills he acquired with the world at large. Kutay has been a student of African Drumming since the age of 5. He is a Music Director and a Costume Designer. Before co-founding Rakaba with Fanta, he was the Musical Director of The Fritong Players. Kutay was a pannist with Atlanta''s Pan People Steel Band, a percussionist and vocalist with Oosadebe International Nigerian Band, co-founder and lead vocalist for Atlanta''s Sierra Soucous Band, and principle performer for the Sierra Leon National Dance Troup. Kutay remains a member of the Board of Director to several of these groups. In addition to performing, he is the Co-Director of Rakaba Institute of Art and Culture, an institute dedicated to educating the community about the traditional music of Africa
