Details:
Kudzu was formed in December of 2003 by Michael (writer and keyboards) and Suzanne Cowan (vocals and co-writer) and Ben Morris (drums). Soon after David Hooper (vocals and acoustic guitar) and Lisa Purvis (vocals and flute) joined. After the release of our CD, "Turn Up Your Lamp" in February of 2005, Jon Bonette joined on bass. Together we spent the next few months practicing and leading worship at various events throughout Athens, Georgia. The desire of Kudzu is to see God glorified through music and lives of worship. We desire to create music that is appealing to us and that pleases the Lord. It is our desire to see people''s lives changed through worship. We believe that music can cut right through the deepest wounds or defenses in people and open them up to an encounter with God. We write the songs that come from our heart and are blessed to be able to lead so many to Him. Kudzu, minus Lisa Purvis, also makes up the praise and worship team at Athens First Assembly of God, where Michael Cowan is the worship pastor.

I have been a part of many musical projects but co-writing and singing with Kudzu has been the best so far. Kudzu has provided me with an avenue of ministry, in which I minister to others in song, and absolutely love the music that I am writing and singing. I believe in this music because I believe that it was inspired by the Lord. When the members of Kudzu come together to play and sing, there is a special anointing that God gives us as we minister to others. We have had much positive feedback from audiences who not only love this music, but are truly touched by a Hand that we can take no credit for. The motive of each member of Kudzu is the same - to be a transparent worshipper who ushers in God''s presence so that others may also worship transparently. I am so honored to be a part of Kudzu. When Michael and I started this band, our prayer was that God would send us other singers and musicians who upon hearing our music, would want to be a part of it. God has been 100% faithful at answering our request. We are humbled by the singers and musicians that He has sent out way. I truly look forward in expectation to see how God will use us to further His kingdom.

Brutally honest...transparent...not very good at "hiding" emotion....the same things that sometimes manifest my "personality flaws" are the same things that the Lord uses to make me a good worship leader. I do not glory in my weaknesses, but I wish to give God glory for making His strength evident through and in spite of my weaknesses. Only God can do that....

I remember the first time I ever heard Mike and Suzanne Cowan lead in worship. I remember that I was actually planning on doing some paperwork that I had in my lap, and would just be content to sort of "half-listen" to the worship music and the people worshipping around me. Honestly, I wasn''t expecting all that much from a female worship leader. I am not chauvinistic...I just really prefer a male voice. Well, from the minute Suzanne opened her mouth I was taken in. I felt the honest, genuine sincerity of authentic worship. This is something that cannot be taught or mimicked. One either has it or one does not. It is the worship leader "x-factor" that is a gift of the Holy Spirit. It is not something that is easily defined. But one can sense the atmospheric "shift" of the Holy Presence, and surrenders to the deep longing in one''s soul and spirit to extol its Creator when a true worship leader begins to praise God. This is what I knew was taking place when Suzanne and Mike began to lead in worship that evening. I am so thankful that God saw fit to have us be able to meet and over the course of a few weeks it became evident that we all shared a similar call of ministry. We desire to worship God through music as a reflection of our own surrendered life to the Holy Spirit of Jesus, AND we have a passionate need to see others do the same. To use an analogy of a heart, the aforementioned desire and passion form the major two of the four chambers in the heart of Kudzu. The other 2 chambers are more personal and minor. To me, they are the joy of being used by God, and growth as a musician and songwriter. I believe that these four chambers are formed by pure motives, and together, they comprise a strong and Christ-centered heart. It is this heart that gives me confidence before God that we will be able to accomplish all that He sets before us, and go wherever He leads us..

Lisa A. Purvis

Born and raised in Lawrenceville, GA. I am a student at The University of GA, studying Child and Family Development and Music. I joined Kudzu at a time when God began speaking His truth into my life. I saw Kudzu as representing just that, God''s truth. We are not about a show or being great musicians, we are there to represent love, humility, and grace for everyone to see. Each of us has our own story, but it has been the same God that has worked in us (1 Corin. 12:6). I thank God constantly for blessing me with these Kudzu friends that truly seek after His heart, and I praise Him for the opportunity to use my gifts to help others know God the way he longs for us to know Him.

Michael V Cowan

I was made to worship God. I was made to lead others in worship. I was made to write music and have loved music since I was a small child, sitting in the den with my dad, listening to record after record. My life has had a continual soundtrack of great music. I am humbled and honored to get to create music for my Lord. So, in Kudzu, I am able to do what I was born to do.
