The real name is ODUNLAMI OGUNBANJO, stage name is LAMI J and the band is ''THE AFRICAN PRIDE'' Born in Abeokuta, Ogun state of Nigeria in the late 70s into the Yoruba ethnic community.

Lami J, a musician, a great composer. His music is an amalgation of highlife, various afro beats and traditional Yoruba music. He is a combination of King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey. Often the music is purely instrumental and danceable - an interplay between traditional Yoruba percussion , chants, talking drums and western instruments. Lami J has added a new dimension to the polyrhythmic sound of afro-beats and highlife. His lyrics, which are sensational, dance inducing and entertaining, are always purely in Yoruba and/or pidgin English.

Several different traditional percussions are employed in Lami J''s music. The Gangan family is most prominent and played by two musicians who combine the various sizes for the basic polyrhythms. The Bata/Omele family is played by two musicians who alternate between soft high driving tones. The others are Conga, Sakara are played by musicians that gives various rhythms and danceable sensational tones. Other instruments are normal western instruments like the sax, drums, guitars etc.

His debut album ''Asiko'' released 1st October, 2004 under the auspices of Hit Squad Records (Nigeria branch). This album is currently enjoying aggressive airplay on both radio and television worldwide while sales volume is increasing. LAMI J AND THE AFRICAN PRIDE have decided to use the later part of 2004 and the whole of 2005 to promote their music worldwide and acquire international recognition status for the band.

Even before his debut album, Lami J has been playing in social functions, parties, concerts within Africa for the past three years. As we all know, the Yoruba tribe which is a major ethnic group in Nigeria love street parties whereby they usually invite highlife artists to perform. Lami J do play in various functions almost every saturday afternoon and night i.e wedding receptions and house warming etc. He is currently playing every Friday night at the Unity Centre, 29 Isaac John street, Ikeja. Unity center is a concert venue owned by a famous Nigerian musician (Madam Onyeka Onwenu Esq) which she has dedicated to uniting Nigerian musicians and the entire Nigeria populace that has diverse ethnic groups. His Concert at the Unity center is been aired every Saturday afternoon for 30 mins by Galaxy Television, Nigeria.

Lami J is fast emerging in the forefront of contemporary African music, rich in the traditions of the continent with his sensational danceable rhythms but cosmopolitan in attitude.

In the nearest future, Lami J intend to form a charitable organization which will organize festivals and concerts in Africa and a music center where African kids can learn how to play famous African instruments.
