Origins of this CD

Al, Barry, Glenn and Mark got together to jam a few times and quickly realized that the chemistry in the quartet was unique. With no desire to rehearse or create elaborate arrangements, the group simply played and recorded songs they liked, a mix of originals and standards. The Who Knew? CD is a selection of these recordings, which were all recorded live with no overdubs. Al, Barry and Glenn have played together in a variety of settings for over twenty years. Mark, a recent addition to the group, complements the others beautifully with his sensitive and creative approach to the drums.

About the Original Compositions

Glenn - I wrote "No Sooner" in 1998 while studying with Jimmy Heath and Roland Hanna at Queens College. The first version was a swing style big band chart that I later reduced to a combo arrangement with a funk groove. The funk version got its first public trial at the Tokyo Blue Note in 1995 when Al and I were touring with The Yoshio Aomori Quartet. The ballad "Gentle Souls" is dedicated to the memory of my father Warren Heckinger and my brother Bruce Heckinger, who were not only multi-talented musicians but also very honest and genuine human beings. "Shtickla" is a slightly quirky tune based on the chord changes of "I Got Rhythm." Al''s arrangement suggestions and the rhythmic spontaneity between Mark and Barry helped me to create the personality of this tune.

Al - "Waltz for Karen" is a Valentine''s Day gift for my beautiful and supportive wife. Mark creates a great feel with his understated, yet sophisticated brush work which Barry complements effortlessly on the bass. Glenn brings the melody to life with his rich, beautiful tone. The inspiration for "Who Knew?" came from a Randy Brecker interview where he reflects on an amusing childhood memory about his younger brother Michael. Despite Michael''s persistent requests to jam with Randy and his friends, the older boys would repeatedly dismiss him to shoot hoops in the driveway while they rehearsed. Reacting to the obvious irony that Michael subsequently became one of the most influential players of his time, Randy simply replied: "Who Knew?" This tune provides an opportunity to stretch out over a loose, modern feel. Barry and Mark create an inspiring rhythmic foundation that demands each soloist rise to the occasion or risk being left behind! The transition from the piano solo to the sax solo is yet another example of Barry and Mark''s spontaneous creativity that permeates the entire Who Knew? CD.
