As a regular contributing writer to Baltimore’s City Paper, Petula Caesar has had the opportunity to interview an eclectic array of the city’s characters, and has expressed her personal opinions though her insightful essays. As an erotic fiction writer, she has been published in erotic author Zane’s popular anthology Caramel Flava in addition to publishing her own collection of short stories. As a freelance writer, she’s been published in everything from The Sun to Baltimore Magazine to Pulp Magazine. As a poet she has performed in venues both live and on radio, locally and across the country, including featuring with The Punany Poets, an erotic performance poetry troupe that has been featured on HBO’s Real Sex. Now she turns her creativity to a new project – a CD of what she calls “love and lust poetry” entitled The Eargasm.
The Eargasm is a collection of Ms. Caesar’s sensual and sexual poems, but it isn’t just spoken word alone. The CD reflects her diverse and eclectic musical tastes as well. In addition to the traditional acapella pieces -- some are live performances and others are studio recorded -- she is also accompanied by original music as well (no samples at all). Everything from house music tracks to smooth jazz sounds can be found on The Eargasm.
Though poetry CDs are traditionally marketed to an underground audience who are fans of spoken word, Caesar believes there is an audience for The Eargasm beyond that core base of supporters. “While I love spoken word, I didn’t record this with just spoken word lovers in mind. This is for lovers of house music, of jazz riffs, of tenor saxophone, of acoustic guitar, of bass guitar, of drums, of keyboards, of the sounds of laughter, of the sounds of words, of the sounds of emotions. And since it is love and lust poetry, it is for lovers in general. While I’m sure spoken word fans will definitely appreciate it, I want to reach out not just to those who know they’ll like this, but also to those who want to try something a little different, maybe even a little more adventurous in their listening.”
The Eargasm is produced by Maurice Carroll of Stinkiface Music at Rawtech Productions in Baltimore, Maryland, and includes special guest appearances by saxophonist Lionel Lyles of The Lionel Lyles Quintet, guitarist Joel Mills and singer/songwriter Walter Maxfield Jones.
