Derick Sebastian, a Maui native from humble beginnings, has matured musically beyond his 26 years and is taking the music world by storm. A proven and accomplished musician, singer and songwriter, Derick has mastered the ukulele with precision picking and warp-speed strumming. With such versatility, he performs in various styles of eclectic genres to produce a mixture of harmonies that demand response.
Consciously choosing to part ways with the usual musical and song writing influences of his genre, Derick combines a diverse love of different artists, genres, and time periods for his inspiration. Some of the artists that have shaped Derick’s musical stylings include Eddie ‘The Ukulele Extraordinaire’ Bush, one of the first established ukulele players from Hawaii to make a profound impact in the national and international scene in the mid 70’s; Troy Fernandez and Kelly Boy De Lima, ukulele greats who transformed perspectives and revived the ukulele popularity and demand in the early 90’s; Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, the voice of Hawaii who involved everyone, gave forever, lived for peace and beauty, and broke barriers between the people of Hawaii; Jake Shimabukuro and James Hill, the ukulele wizards who evolved and introduced higher standards solely on the ukulele itself; Bob Marley, the visionary artist who beyond doubt transformed and influenced today’s society and culture; Carlos Santana, the person who always believed in speaking the true message through his guitar; and John Mayer, who is always simply and uniquely himself, and who believed in becoming a success on his own and in his own terms.
Derick’s first project release, “Just the Beginning,” is an introductory 6-song CD EP that contains a variety of genres describing his innovative approach to his art of music, encompassing his own progressive and experimental style. An ukulele instrumental, “Eddie Bush Tribute,” is Derick’s way to honor the legendary ukulele master who took Derick under his wing to teach him the true meaning of sharing an art from within. The song mixes a variety of emotions and playing styles, such as classical picking, strumming techniques, and power chord progressions. “Imperfect World,” exemplifies Derick’s vocal and songwriting versatility. This song describes how people can easily get caught up in life’s everyday trials and tribulations, but need to look beyond towards Faith to prosper.
Derick’s most recent project release, “My Redemption,” is a 4-song CD EP that describes his true inspiration of accepting his evolving and demanding lifestlyle as a husband, father, brother, friend, and music artist. “Destiny,” a song that describes a person who doubts and quesitons one’s own walk in life, but prevails through faith and hope in destiny. “Lover’s Walk,” a smooth and easy-listening ukulele composition illustrating how true love start from within. Lastly, “My Redemption.” This song exemplifies Derick’s core transformation and genuine faith in God by aceepting all chapters in his life as blessings.
