For many centuries, Paris has been one of the most important cultural centers of the Western World, harboring great artists, among them, famous musicians and composers. Through the works for flute and piano presented in this album, it is possible to glance over genres and styles explored by Debussy, Leclair, Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Caplet and Godard in the Cité Lumière.

The Duo Barrenechea, formed by flautist Sérgio Barrenechea and his wife, the pianist Lúcia Barrenechea, has been performing extensively since 1989. They have played recitals in many cities in Brazil and in the United States. The Duo Barrenechea aims to explore a wide repertoire for flute and piano, including the promotion of Brazilian music. The Duo has participated in an array of events such as the Iowa Flute Festival, the meetings of the Brazilian Music Education Association – ABEM (1995), and the Brazilian Association of Flutists – ABRAF (2000), the 4th Arts Festival of Goias City (2001), the 2nd National Seminar of Music Reseach (2002), 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th Brasilia International Summer Festival (2002 to 2005, and 2007). They have performed recitals at the Universidade Federal da Paraíba, University of Iowa, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, New York University, Universidade Estadual de Campinas - UNICAMP and Universidade Federal de Goiás. The duo presented recitals in many music halls in Brazil such as Museu da República and Centro Cultural da Justiça Federal, both in Rio de Janeiro, Teatro São Joaquim in Goiás City, Sala Martins Penna in Brasília, Teatro Goiânia in Goiás, Cine Bangüê at the Espaço Cultural in João Pessoa.

Lúcia Barrenechea is a native of Goiânia, Brazil. She has a BM in piano performance from the Universidade Federal de Goiás, where she was a student of Glacy Antunes de Oliveira, and a MM from The Boston University, where she studied with Maria Clodes Jaguaribe. She received her DMA in Piano Performance from the University of Iowa under the instruction of Réne Lecuona. Lúcia Barrenechea performed in masterclasses of renowned artists, such as Caio Pagano, Yara Bernette, Homero Magalhães, Joseph Kalischstein, Menahem Pressler and Florence Kirsch. She has been featured as soloist with the Orquestra Sinfônica Estadual de São Paulo, under the direction of Eleazar de Carvalho, with the Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás, and with the Orquestra Sinfônica de Goiânia. She was in the piano faculty of the the Universidade Federal de Goiás, and now holds a teaching position at the Instituto Villa-Lobos at UNIRIO in Rio de Janeiro.

Sérgio Barrenechea was born in Brasília, Brazil, where he started his musical studies at the Escola de Música de Brasília. He received his BM from the Universidade de Brasília, where he studied with Odette Ernest Dias and his
MM from The Boston Conservatory, where he was a student of William H. Grass. He received his DMA in Flute Performance from the University of Iowa, and the title of his dissertation is “The Flute Music of Francisco Mignone with an Analysis of the Sonata for Flute and Piano.” Mr. Barrenechea has played in masterclasses for Julius Baker, Walfrid Kujala, Carol Wincenc and Keith Underwood. He has been featured as soloist with the La Fosse Baroque Ensemble, the Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás, the Orquestra Jovem de Brasília, and the Orquestra de Câmara Goyazes. He was principal flute at the Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás, held a teaching position at the Universidade Federal de Goiás, and was president of the Sociedade Goiana de Música. Currently, Mr. Barrenechea teaches flute and chamber music at the Instituto Villa-Lobos at UNIRIO, in Rio de Janeiro.
