The Red Hot Poker Dots are a multi-award winning band from Australia, formed in 1998. They are well respected and highly established on national and international platforms for their captivating and dynamic live performances, garnering rave reviews and solid radio and industry support worldwide. The RHPD’s, perform unique originals, that reflect their infectious personalities, and their style has been branded ‘Swampy Tonk’; a combination of old school country, hillbilly, yodelling, rockabilly and country-rock, reinvented into a totally new and refreshing musical experience. The RHPD’s perform either as a singer/songwriter duo; Lil’O’Dette- Bull Fiddle, Vocals & Ray Dee Ator- Guitar, Vocals, or with a full band. Having recently relocated to the USA in 2007 on a permanent basis after six consecutive years of international touring, these artistically driven individuals are seeking full time management and booking agents, to assist them in their professional musical pursuits.

In short: International cow-punk flies in the face of fashion.

Tourists that they are, these Dots still connect with their roots – country / new wave central, the Espie, St Kilda. Home to precursors the Dirty Hanks and Shonkytonk. It’s a long way to the paddock if you wanna shock a foal, and through dedication the Red Hot Poker Dots have taken on the world in the past few years. This assured new album is the tangible result. Live, I’m sure, is where the antics of Lil’O’Dette, singing while standing on a bass bigger than she is would really jell. Then there is Ray Dee Ator, in overalls and truckers cap, flailing on his vintage Maton Firebyrd. Visual stuff, but this is a CD not a DVD. As such it takes a couple of songs to settle down, but 13 tracks later it is the “shot him down to watch him die” duo Hangin Tree and Gundagai that leave the most lasting impression. That is, a band having fun and writing their own rules.

The Red Hot Poker Dots strut their stuff in a vaudevillian style expanded on overseas trips. The well travelled quartet impacted in Europe and the US, with a quirky hybrid of the jump, swing and country played by artists diverse as Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks and Ethel & the Shameless Hussies. Although the music has American roots the laces its kitsch cocktail with a distinct Australian flavour. Singer / bull fiddler Lil’O’Dette drives the train with charismatic verve from rollicking entrée C is for Cowboy as language of love cures dialect dramas and whimsical Pony Pot Pie and Wheels Are Fallin’. Yodelling has long polarised listeners in Australia – from the historic howling of Mary Schneider to the retro yells of Wylie & the Wild West. So when O’Dette cuts loose in Can’t Live Without It you can like it or lump it. More accessible is her laid back waltz through Full Moons & Rainbows and murder ballad Gundagai with wry word play about the demise of a cheating lover: “I gunned a guy down in Gundagai/that’s why I’m in this cell / just because I have no regrets they say I’ll go to hell” But don’t get the impression this is all vino and vittles. Lil’O’Dette coats the ruptured romance of Country Star with a lachrymose lava and guitarist Ray Dee Ator injects Sparkleradio and Hangin’ Tree with pungent pathos. He also pays homage to their down home roots in the southern swagger of Saxapahaw and they deliver a sequel to Sheb Wooley’s Purple People Eater in Hippoplatypus. Billy Bob Roobarb on mandolin, dobro and guitar, Drew Gallus on pedal steel, Dave Moll on piano and drummer Blind Dog Walker, enrich the band’s country roots on a disc cut at Atlantis in Hawthorn. The band, formed in 1998, owes as much to Memphis, Nashville, Texas as the Aussie Mulga and plays …….

This is a really refreshing album to listen to with the old style country, and as they describe their live shows, “a night of hillbilly mayhem, with more honk, tonk and yodeling than grandma’s shotgun wedding”. This is one of those albums that takes me back to the old days of the easy listening, “western music”, with double bass, twanging guitar, dobro and mandolin, plus the authentic sound of cowbell, percussion and honky tonk piano. They won the 2004 Tamworth Country Music Bandstand Award, and then followed-up with a three month tour of the U.S, followed by a busy round of appearances at different venues around Australia, including the Gympie Muster.
The Red Hot Poker Dots are an independent and self-managed band. They have gained an incredible respect and following both in Australia and overseas from audiences and peers alike. This album leaves you wanting more when you listen to the 13 tracks – it is very good and a great add to your country music library. Go on to the website and have a look.

‘They don’t play polkas and they don’t dress like Joan Kirner, so I guess that is two good reasons why the Red Hots are poked not polked.’

Now a red hot poker is still a dangerous incendiary thing of course and so is country comedy – that is yet another reason why they are the RED HOT POKER DOTS (RHPD). Like many of their Cow Punk antecedents, the RHPD hail from the environs of Melbourne, but unlike inner city brethren THE DIRTY HANKS, or SHONKYTONK, they really are ( at least on the evidence of new album JETLAGGED AND JITTERY) more ‘poke’ than ‘punk’ – even if the visual evidence may lead you to assume otherwise. Firstly the main singer and double player LIL’O’DETTE, is a lithesome creature prone to jump on top of said bass (sometimes called the bull fiddle or doghouse ) and keep right on plucking. She may also even yodel while doing so – now that is multi-talented! Then twangy guitar man and sometime vocalist RAY DEE ATOR affects the appearance of a southern (as in south of the USA ) redneck complete with gimme hat ( a baseball cap with a construction/trucking advertisement on it either ‘given away’ at source or sold for $25 in trendy Chapel St or Oxford St, Paddington). I won’t question where Ray gets his from, if he wears bib and brace overalls or if indeed as along with a couple of guitar pick-ups he has a truck to match. I can’t theorise quite as much on mandolin, dobro, lead guitar playing BILLY BOB ROOBARB or cowbell/percussionist BLIND DOG WALKER but I can hear their contributions on the new album to be released in time for a huge amount of gigs the band has at the 2005 Tamworth Festival. I can tell you the RHPD’s have put in the legwork to get to where they are today, often busking at festivals to get a foot in the outdoors and along the way picking up the Tamworth West Leagues Club Country Bandstand Award in 2004. This got them national distribution of their new album via ONE STOP ENTERTAINMENT, along with a marketing and development plan, a national radio single release, and possibly even a free set of Ginzu knives. They have played the Gympie Muster last two years, the last three St Kilda Festivals, Apollo Bay 2003 and forthcoming, Australia Day Country Rocks Festival in Sydney, and most intriguingly The National Festival of Beers in Melbourne 2003. I may have been at that one but too drunk to remember. It doesn’t end there – the band has made several overseas (and we ain’t talkin’ Tasmania) forays to the UK and the US (probably so Ray can pick up some new caps on the cheap) performing at such prestigious venues as The Continental Club in Austin Texas, GBGB’s in New Yorks Bowery’ the Atlantis Music Festival (not sure where that one is, possibly underwater) and Sleazefest (no comment).

I wonder what our sheltered overseas friends thought of these brash Aussies singing songs such as Pony Pot Pie, Gundagai, Hippo-Platypus, Hangin’ Tree and Wheels are Fallin’ From My Wagon? Actually with a fair body of work (for example previous album Thirty Mile Square) out already they may not have been performing the above, exact same songs at all venues – conditions may apply, charges may vary in some areas.
The current single Country Bubble is on high rotation on CMC/Foxtel – why then people is it not on the new album? This and other questions I’d pop to the band if they were not just so doggone busy being out there performing with a stage act you won’t soon forget, and being lively old school performers with musical hearts, belting it out with grit and guts, possessing a camaraderie that most bands only dream about. See, you write a bio and someone with no scruples like me just rips it off!
What I can tell you on my own is that the RED HOT POKER DOTS have on record, taken on the hardest musical area to successfully pull off, a mix of comedy, parody and sincerity. The latest album is a pretty good stab at all three with some witticisms such as “I gunned a guy down in Gundagai” close to classic; a fairly straight ode to the wonders of yodeling (Can’t Live Without It) and a most affecting and overall (not Ray’s) feeling of well being that should make even the most curmudgeonly of you out there smile.
