Details:
The Los Angeles-based Rock Doves were started in 2006 by singer/songwriter/bassist Noah Lowman and guitar player Jesús Martinez. Influenced by the rhythms of reggae and other world music, along with the standard rock ’n’ roll and soul classics, Lowman set out to write songs that would incorporate many different musical styles into distinct pop sound.

Working with drummer José Cano, the The Rock Doves recorded 10 tracks for their self-titled debut album. The first track, “Baby Come Home,” is probably the slowest track on the album but also one of the The Rock Dove’s favorites for it simplicity and catchy hook. It’s a typical break-up song that the band likes to think of as belonging to the neo-soul genre.

The next track, “Amelie,” draws its influence from a particular type of Mexican music called Norteño. On this song, Martinez, who grew up playing Norteño music, utilizes his quick picking technique to create the track’s rich polyrhythmic structure.
“Riot,” the albums third track, is a straight-ahead dance song whose lyrics seem to simultaneously encourage and caution against the excesses of the L.A. club scene.
“I’m Gonna Win This Time (Ha Ha)” is the band’s underdog anthem. With the contributions by drummer Alberto Aviña and guitar player Manuel Sariñana, and highlighted by Martinez’s driving rhythm guitar, this fun and upbeat song tells the story of overcoming the odds.

The Rock Doves show their political consciousness with the tracks “Peace is Equality” and “Corruption.” Both songs contain lyrics that are critical of dishonest government. While “Peace” has the feel of a reggae track in the mold of So Cal’s Sublime, “Corruption” incorporates the Latin rhythm of Cumbia to give the tracks its pulsing urban beat.

“You Don’t See” has a particular Latin feel as well but features the heavily distorted guitar of Martinez that pays homage to the band’s psychedelic rock influences. Other infectious tracks on the album include “Everybody Move,” “The City,” and “Hey Mama,” which is one of bands more popular songs and is highlighted by the trumpet playing of musician and sound engineer David Peña.

All songs were recorded at Dapemo Studios in 2008 and produced by the Rock Doves. All songs were written by Lowman with additional help on “I’m Gonna Win This Time” by Sariñana.

The Rock Doves play throughout the Los Angeles area. Show information and more about the band can be found at https://www.tradebit.com
