Details:
"The melting pot that is No Crows borrows from the cosmopolitanism of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Loyko''s innovations (with just a tincture of the freewheeling of Django Reinhart) for their debut.... Swing rarely felt this good ". Siobhan Long, Irish Times

NoCrows’ follow-up to the acclaimed debut “At the Strand” was recorded in Urs Lanz’s Doolittle Studio’s in Sligo and features several guests, including violin virtuoso Oleg Ponomarev and saxophonist Steve Hanks.

The CD features several tunes penned by all four band members, a tune written for the band by Dervish’s Cathy Jordan and, as always, several traditional tunes from around the world.

Violinist Steve Wickham’s “Crowswing” and the traditional up-tempo Klezmer “Hot Bulgar” reflect the group’s Eastern European influences. “Magpie” composed by Mandolinist/Cellist Anna Houston and Declan Corey’s “Two Black Russians” retain a trad Irish feel while retaining the funky latin influences of guitarist Felip Carbonell and bassist Eddie Lee.

A distinctive latin feel permeates the whole CD, particularly in Carbonell’s one vocal appearance in his beautiful Catalan lament, “Ai Mu Mare”, the traditional Spanish piece “Sibil-la”, and Lee’s composition “Mimi’s Chorinho”, along with their unique treatment of the Spanish pop tune “Hijo de la Luna” and a stunning rendition of Astor Piazzolla’s “Chiquilín de Bachín”. Cathy Jordan’s tune “Claudia” merges seamlessly into “Des de Mallorca a l’Alguer”, a traditional Catalan tune from Sardinia to complete what amounts to a wondrously rich musical travelogue by one of Ireland’s most cosmopolitan folk groups.
