POP: Folky Pop, FOLK: Folk Pop

Details:
Liftoff is an original acoustic duo that departs from the monotony surrounding the mainstream acoustic scene today. With guitar, vocals, and saxophone, they maintain an acoustic vibe, while providing engaging, multi-layered arrangements most groups their size lack. Imagine the percussive guitar stylings of a Dave Matthews or Ani DiFranco, robust dual vocals like the Bare Naked Ladies, and saxophone reminiscent of your favorite Van Morrison record. Add an irresistible fusion of musical styles, two great stage personalities, and impeccable musicianship, and you have a sense of the magic inherent in Liftoff.

Liftoff''s debut album, Begin is a testament the group''s unique sound and energy. Recorded primarily at Bungalow 9 studios (Amelia) on two-inch tape, the duo went for a very organic approach with the record. Using only the instrumentation you will hear at their live shows- two vocals, guitars, and saxophone- they were able to focus in on the melodic and harmonic subtleties of the arrangements on the warmth of analog. The result is a very rich sounding 9-track album that leaves space for the songs to breathe, a live feel, and that sought after vitality so many studio albums lack.

Begin moves through upbeat rockers and mellow, winding ballads, to more traditional folk rock and acoustic groove tunes. Each song has it''s own distinct character and feel. The lead off track, a bluesy ode to their hometown of Portland, OR called "Soul Music" features the guitar savvy of Michael Herrman and soulful vocals of Trevor Rasmussen. "Soul Music" segues into Sheer Treasure, a driving guitar and saxophone duet with a Jim Morrison style vocal and lyric powerfully laid on top. "Perfect Web" is a haunting ballad about a fleeting love affair on which the Saxophone mimics a cello or foghorn, giving way only to the sweet, careful vocals of Michael Herrman. The album concludes aptly with two energy-filled tunes, "Begin" and "Legend of Chief Neskowin," recorded live at Whiskey Springs Studio in Wilsonville, OR.
