BIOGRAPHY

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Edwin was raised in a musical family – his parents and siblings all played musical instruments. Edwin learnt to play drums at the age of 9, piano at 14 and guitar at 18. At primary school he joined the Sandton Marching Band, in which he played the snare drum. In high school he formed a school band with three other friends. By 1998 they were getting serious about music, but were forced to part company when one of the members changed schools.

Shortly after, Edwin formed a new band with his older brother Wayne, Michael, one of the members of the original band and his younger brother Craig. The new band, LMJ was named after the song Little Miss Jealousy, written by Wayne.

LMJ quickly became popular by playing many live gigs, and won a number of competitions, one of which led to the opportunity to record a two-track demo CD. This was completed in the winter of 2001, and was produced with the help of a popular band in South Africa called Mean Mr Mustard.

At University in Capetown, Edwin started fine-tuning his guitar and song-writing skills. In 2004 he joined the university residence serenade group. In 2005 they won the National University Serenade competition.

In 2006 Edwin moved to Sydney, where he continued to compose and perform music. After writing a couple of songs that proved to be very popular with fans, he was encouraged by his supporters to pursue a musical career full-time. This resulted in the album Every Journey Begins with the First Step...

QUOTES

Edwin on making music ..
"I find the process soothing, and I feel great joy when I see people enjoying my music. I want to write and produce music that touches, moves and inspires people.”

On the target audience ...
"I''d like my music to reach all age groups, even though I know it''s difficult to please everyone since we all have different tastes. I try to write music that both men and women can relate to. WiNDE has a ''pop-music'' sound and is targeted for radio where it can reach more people.”

On composition ...
“My song-writing technique is quite unique. Initially I find a chord progression that sounds good, then find a melody to suit it, and finally write lyrics to suit the music. But this process can be quite tedious and sometimes I get stuck with the words.

"Recently, I started using my MP3 player to record and store ideas that I come up with, that I play on my guitar. After I''ve made many recordings I listen to them all, and pick out a handful of catchy tunes. It''s easier from this point to write the lyrics and lay out the song structure.

"I also find myself humming a tune at the most unexpected times and now make sure I record it straight away. I can then come back to it later, and take what I like from it to create a song.”

Edwin''s musical influences:
