GREGORY MAYTAN joined the Valparaiso University faculty as Assistant Professor of Music in 2006. He began playing violin at age four in Lulea, Sweden, and completed his undergraduate studies in Stockholm. He earned his doctorate in violin performance from the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, where he studied with the renowned violinist Miriam Fried.

At Indiana University, Dr. Maytan performed the Brahms and Beethoven violin concertos with orchestra and gave many solo and chamber recitals. In Sweden he performed the Tchaikovsky violin concerto with the Stockholm Royal University Orchestra. In 2003, he performed the world premiere of Gary Robert Buchanan''s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra with the Foundation Orchestra of Reno, Nevada.

During the summer of 2004, he was awarded a full scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Festival. He also participated in the International Chamber Music Festival in Vienna, Austria, where he was a featured prize winner. He has performed and toured with numerous orchestras, and his concerts have been broadcast on radio and television in the U.S. and Europe. He has participated in masterclasses with Zakhar Bron, Leonidas Kavakos and Michela Martin.

At Valparaiso University, Gregory teaches violin and viola studio, coaches chamber and orchestral music, and teaches musicianship courses. He performs widely as violin soloist and recently appeared as featured soloist with the Carson City (Nevada) Symphony. He has also performed the Barber violin concerto with the Whiting Festival Orchestra and performed the Tchaikovsky violin concerto on tour in Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Linz. In October 2006 he was awarded third prize in an international violin competition in Stockholm sponsored by the Royal Swedish Academic of Music. Dr. Maytan and his wife, Sandra, reside in Valparaiso.


NICOLE LEE was born in Vancouver, British Columbia , where she began her musical studies at the age of four. She entered the piano-competition circuit early, participating in hundreds—and winning fist-place in over one-hundred—Province- and Nation-wide competitions before graduating from high school. Also while in her teens she earned both A.R.C.T. Performer’s and A.R.C.T. Teacher’s diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto as well as Licentiate and Fellowship diplomas from the Trinity College of London. She was named First Runner-Up in the International Stravinsky Awards Competition. Ms. Lee later attended the University of Southern California, where she studied piano performance with John Perry. While earning her Bachelor’s and then her Master’s degrees, Ms. Lee continued to compete and perform. During her college years, she was awarded First Prize in the Pasadena Fine Arts Club Competition and was a semi-finalist in the Royal Over-Seas League Competition in London. She also performed as soloist at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, at the Sarasota Opera House, for a radio program in Ottawa, Canada, and with several symphony orchestras including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Florida West Coast Symphony Orchestra, and the New Westminster Orchestra. After leaving USC, Ms. Lee spent time teaching or playing at Malone, Mount Union College, Kent State University, and the College of Wooster. Currently, she is active as a chamber musician and soloist, and is accompanying at Valparaiso University
