Details:
The “Modul” Trio can hardly be described as novices at the Russian Electronic Music stage. In the last 5 years Evgeniy Shchukin, Evgeniy Fomin and Alexander Tochilkin made a long journey from home music experimentation in their native town of Krasnodar to the residency in the best clubs of Moscow and North American and European disk releases.

They were published among other places on the Belgian label U-Cover and even on the digital subsidiary of the legendary Harthouse, which was founded fifteen years ago by Sven Vath.

The distinguishing feature of the band is the ability to freely maneuver between the format of club music (Modul are well-known to the usual crowd of minimal-techno parties) and meditative home-listening electronic genre.

The band first appeared on the musical horizon in 2006, with net-releases on Canada-based “Nishi” label and the German “Phonocake”. One of their tracks found its way to the Moscow-based “https://www.tradebit.com” label’s compilation “Last Dots of a Certain Sound” (https://www.tradebit.com). In the beginning the band was performing as an experimental outfit, but it was the dance music that brought the trio its fame.

A few tracks from the “Passed” mini that was released by the German “No Response” label ended up in the playlists of many DJs in Europe.

Modul naturally became a part of the techno-community that developed around the Fragment net-label. They are regulars of the “Electroshick” parties at the “Ikra” club and “Fragment Sessions” at the “Shanti”. Later one of their tracks appeared on the CD-mix of Artem Arshanitsa, the founder of “Electroshick”. One of the band’s releases was published by the German “Harthouse Digital” label – the successor to the Harthouse giant, which made its reputation as the key international outpost of the techno music across the world.

Their most recent release “Dots” reveals to the listener the experimental side of the project – both Evgeniy and Aleksandr return to their roots – IDM, glitch-electronique and even ambient.

The crunchy broken rhythmic, soothing landscapes, woven from synthetic strings, deep bass lines and sentimental synthesized trills are the ingredients of their new album.

“Dots” is an example of classic melodic IDM, consistent with the “Second Wave” esthetics, the music of the trio from Krasnodar can be compared to the releases of such labels like Merck, Neo Ouija, or the Belgian U-Cover, which published Modul’s “Re-Cutting Edge” recently.

The album represents symbiotic relationship between modern technologies and the retro-futuristic romanticism, the experimental sound-design and the traditional classical harmonies.
