Details:
Modakai (Mod-a-kie) was crafted out of the open dusty plains of Texas. Born and raised as working class ranch hands who slaved in the summer heat found solemn in music (mostly from the United Kingdom). The band took many shapes and forms from high school and fashioned various members through the late 90’s but found its solid foundation in 2003. After having become one of the larger bands in Texas finding their way into local media across the state, their music found its way into the UK airwaves. College and Indie bloggers ranted over the band until their song, “Hard to Keep” was unleashed on the BBC Radio 1 airwaves by Jo Whiley. Their self released EP hit Virgin Megastores and disappeared within a matter of weeks as their second single “If You’ll Stay” found its way on to Radio 1 again a couple of months later.

Modakai had started recording their self titled full length album in early 2006. In over 6 different studios (to achieve the right acoustics Brian wanted for each song), the band recorded and re-recorded for almost a year as they scoured the planet for vintage analog pedals to attain every sound they wanted. Famed producer, Rip Rowan (prod. Old 97’s, Rhett Miller, and several large R&B artists), learned of the band and started mixing the album before they finished in December of 2007.

One night while the band was drinking cheap whiskey on the border of Mexico on the hood of a ’64 Mustang, lead singer and songwriter, Brian Hedenberg, decided it was time to dust off their boots and head to New York City. Within three days, their pickup was loaded. They bought a map from a local gas station and started driving north. They dropped off the radar for almost a year while they got settled in and began playing small clubs and coffee shops in and around New York. They spent every weekend outside Arlene’s Groceries, Pianos, The Living Room, and Mercury Lounge handing out CDs and meeting people. It wasn’t long before they had built up a buzz in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The band was asked to play the Emergenza International Music Festival blowing away every competition in first place up to the semi-finals. Modakai is starting to stretch their wings into the international community on the brink of their debut album release scheduling tours and finding new radio airwaves.
