YOU DON’T KNOW ME
This CD is a culmination of songs that I had floating around for sometime, but never recorded. Completed in 2004 after 7 years of learning to play the instruments, sing the vocals and operate the recording gear.
THE SONGS:
YOU DON’T KNOW ME: A song that explains itself pretty well. Also a reasonable idea for a CD title. After all - You Don’t……..
LOST & FOUND: I like the idea of love limbo, kind of the lost & found of romance. Where we hang out in between relationships with other lost souls, waiting to be found again.
THE ONE YOU WANT: I wanted to try some big chorus type background vocals, and I had this song. One thing led to another.
COMIN’ AROUND THIS TIME: Written for / to my wife right after we decided to change our friendship into a relationship. What a great idea, the song is a true story.
NOT WHAT IT SEEMS: A little cynicism from the nineties. The commentator was my response to myself to not take myself too seriously.
LIVIN WITHOUT YOUR LOVE: It seems we all meet one that is never happy with anything about us , but won’t leave. Finally they do and the question appears, “What was that all about’?
MEMORIES: Then again, while you’re in the relationship the questioning has already begun, and the outcome seems apparent.
YOU BRING LOVE: Then the right one appears and you think you’re Springsteen. Well, I did. Maybe MR S would have sung and played it better, but it’s the thought that counts.
GETAWAY: A simple statement. Lets get going while the going is good.
THAT’S WHERE I WANTED TO STAY: Traveling back in time to the first song I wrote (1974). Was influenced at the time by Jim Croce. Added a little muscle for fun.
DON’T WANNA LOSE YOUR LOVE: A song with a long ride / fade. Watched a friend struggle in his relationship when things started to unravel. Fortunately they were able to hold it together.
THE GEAR
All selections recorded, edited, mixed and mastered on a Roland VS1680.
All the instruments were played (sworn at) by me.
The vocals were performed by myself and my lovely wife Liz. Recorded with an AKG414 microphone.
The drum machine (BOSS 660) was played live in sections and edited while sequencing to convey more of a “real” feel.
The Bass parts were recorded direct on a (4) string Yamaha RBX 270. I don’t know if this is good or bad, I liked the color.
The keyboard parts were played on a Yamaha electric Piano into a Roland JV1010 module.
I used a Taylor 414ce for all the steel string acoustic parts, recorded with an AKG 414 microphone.
A Yamaha CG150CCA classical guitar, recorded direct, was used in spots.
The main solo (electric) guitar is pictured on the back CD cover, and is my main tool. Its called “The Machine” and was utilized for all the electric parts. I built the guitar in 1993 and have used it exclusively since. The body is based on a Tele and Strat with a maple Warmoth neck that I custom fit. The electronics and bridge are from Carvin. The pickups are coil tapped and can provide the single coil Strat / Tele type sounds, but can also provide Les Paul type power when switched into the humbucker mode.
