Black Biscuit
What the heck is a “Black Biscuit” and why would anyone name a rock band after it? No “Black Biscuit” doesn’t refer to a ball of flour, eggs and yeast that have been tossed in the oven for too long and burnt to a cancerous crisp. “Black Biscuit” is a slang term for a hockey puck. “Put the biscuit in the basket” means shoot the puck into the net. O.K. great. So again, why name a band after a slang term for a hockey puck? Well the story begins years ago when teenage hockey player and aspiring guitarist, Mike Moreside, got teammate Shane Pierone to take up the 6 stringer. The two formed a band that played local venues and parties. Then real life got in the way as the band members pursued real life stuff, like jobs and family. Mike, John and Shane met playing hockey and figured out their common interests. Every so many years they would get together and play, but nothing permanent. Mike started playing bass in a band with guitarist Matt Shipley but was always itching to get back to his music which was always on the back-burner. Being like hockey-minded they naturally convinced Shane to get out more. Mike and Shane agreed that John was a perfect choice for bass because John is an attorney so he gave them someone to make fun of! Usually they just picked on the drummer but they were losing too many drummers as a result. Two drummers later Troy Woody was added followed by the youngster Matt Shipley on lead guitar. “Black Biscuit” was thus mutated. With three writers and lead vocalists “Black Biscuit” is about life, hockey and the attitudes and frustrations associated with the fastest game on Earth and life in general. Game On!
