In the summer of 2003, something was unleashed upon the American public, the likes of which had never been seen. The destruction that was left in its wake included mass depression, social degradation and a collective dry heave within us all. When the dust settled, all that remained were shattered careers and battered egos, and yet despite its obvious terrorist backing, this evil managed to hypnotize our fellow citizens with its “bangin’ chicks”, “bumpin’ jams” and its “DUUUUUDDDE!” –ness.
The members of Bright Nights did not see “2Fast2Furious”. What they saw was something much more terrifying. There were sinister forces at work here and action was needed to save our society. Suddenly, clichéd phrases like “start a band” and “change the world” got thrown around and preparations began in earnest.
Singer/songwriter Shaun Hoak and Bassist/bartender Ryan Jones decided to launch their “eartack” in the untapped, lucrative coffeehouse scene. After waging battles at open-mic nights across the Inland Empire, the band (hitherto known as Haulin’ Oats) slowly gained a following. Word was spreading. Their moms told their aunts. Their aunts told their grandmas. Their grandmas drank coffee. Soon, amid awkward reunions with some shit-kickin’ 2nd cousins, Hoak and Jones surveyed their vast “following” and declared the coffeehouse scene conquered. A new stage was looming on the horizon: a stage shared with others who shared their vision, a stage of hard work and heartache, a stage in a room with a bar that accepts tickets in exchange for alcohol. Yes, a new dawn was upon them.
With Drummer/pacifist/ex-marine Chad Marks and Guitar virtuoso/fitness guru Tanner Dean now in the fold, the band (now called Bright Nights after Jones’ drunken epiphany) set out in the spring of 2006 to gig around Orange County with the hopes of being discovered (or at least score some of the fabled “drink tickets” they had heard so much about). The shows went well, the band honed their craft, and the following grew (Uncle Shaun welcomed a nephew!). Yes, things were on the up and up. But Bright Nights were in for a surprise.
“The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” was released in the summer of 2006, setting back months of hard work and dimming the light switch on the already flickering 30 watt bulb that lights our society’s way. These were dark days. However, Bright Nights could not be dismayed so easily. They channeled the Great Billy Ocean and “got going” when “the going got rough.” Preparations were made to record the Debut Album.
The band toiled for over a year to finish “A Rival Departure” but it was a labor of love. They utilized several studios (i.e. homes), mixed and re-mixed the material to bring out the full essence the likes that has never been heard before. Ears are happier now. Sadly, copies of the Fast and Furious DVD collection are still available at stores and onDemand. Happily, a new Bright Nights fan is born every five years or so. And there are a few family reunions on the horizon. Get your 10 dollars ready.
Update: In June of 2009 the next installment of the Fast and Furious franchise will be released in theaters. Bright Nights will be ready.
