Details:
Jan’s songs focus on lyrics that tell stories, pull heart strings and rig surprises chased with bellylaughs. His solo concert experience might be best described as hot licks and memorable tunes in a style that is equal parts Randy Newman and Taj Mahal mixed with dashes of Dr. John and Tom Waitts. Jan''s first solo CD is in final stages of production, and will be released in July 2008.

Jan Randall’s early gigs included playing piano and singing original songs in coffee houses while supporting himself as a theatre composer and musical director. As a singer/songwriter, Jan was a regular feature of the Hovel folk club in Edmonton, and also played solo at Montreal’s Yellow Door, the Regina Folk Festival, the Edmonton Singer/Songwriter Festival, the Sasquatch Folk Festival, and the Edmonton Folk Club. His folk band Manna was a collaboration of five writers who were high school friends and it was the first band to be managed by Holger Peterson who later went on to create Stony Plain Records. Although it was only together for two years, Manna toured North America as an opener for Jesus Christ Superstar, and as part of that show performed its songs with many major orchestras, including the Detroit and Edmonton Symphonies.

Jan''s theatre productions included Ain''t Misbehavin'', Billy Bishop Goes to War, and several original musicals. This led to a couple of years writing and performing for Second City, and while there collaborated with many of their stars, including Katherine O''Hara, Robin Duke, Ryan Stiles, Richard Kind and Mike Myers. He also wrote three figure skating musicals, and Midsummer Night’s Ice Dream was produced as a television special and subsequently arranged for concert as an orchestral suite.

Jan’s venturing into the world of classical music led to a music degree in composition in 1975. He followed this with jazz and big band arranging studies at North Texas State University, he then built a recording studio which has to date produced sound tracks for over 700 television and film productions in all styles of music including a recent episode of David Suzuki''s "Nature of Things." Recognition for the quality of his original soundtracks include the Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association’s award for best music in 1998 for the NFB documentary "Lost Over Burma" which was narrated by Christopher Plummer. In 2001 he was both Musical Director and Composer for the World Championships in Athletics opening and closing ceremonies which was broadcast live to over four billion people.

Jan has also worked as a sideman for many other original artists. These include internationally known legends Bo Diddley, Otis Rush, Sha Na Na, and Gary US Bonds. He has led and fronted numerous cover and house bands, and has performed with many original Canadian artists including Gaye DeLorme (The Rodeo Song), Lionel Rault, Rusty Reed, Dave Babcock, Jeremiah McDade, and Amos Garrett.

Although Jan was born in Philadelphia, he was raised in Canada and after a lifetime in music, in 2005 Jan discovered he is third cousins with Arlo Guthrie and was invited that year to meet his American relatives at a family reunion in San Francisco. Jan currently lives in Edmonton, Alberta where he continues to pursue songwriting, classical composition and soundtrack production.
