Details:
"Tales of the Black Experience" is a set of musical tales depicting the African-American existence - past, present and future. The first in a set of compositions dealing with the issue of blacks in America, "Tales" combines poetry and modern jazz to act as a preface to the coming compositions.

Its 10 musical selections and 5 poetic narrations deal with different eras of African-American history, from pre-colonial West Africa through slavery and on to complete emancipation, a goal toward which we are still striving. The piece ends on a philosophical note: that the ultimate goal for Black America is to transcend the still rampant slave mentality, and to name ourselves spiritually, socially, and economically. The goal of "Tales of the Black Experience" is to challenge the audience to draw their own conclusions and act on them to better, not only themselves, but all African peoples. Mark Lomax, II composed this extended work in 1997.

The 11 pieces that form "Tales" are a mix of blues and modal forms. The pieces are all thematic. They have been written to tell specific parts of the story and, to create a particular mood in the listener. The mood of the first half of the suite is dark, ominous, even brooding. The second half has a lighter and more philosophical mood.

The Following is an excerpt from ''A closer look at Tales of the Black Experience'' by Mark Lomax, II. Visit our website to find the complete essay.

The Creator simply told me that "what makes Tales of the Black Experience a great record is the fact that encoded with in that music is the message and theology of liberation. African-Americans will never truly be free until we are totally free of the chains of physical, psychological, and spiritual slavery." We have yet to claim that which is ours. The mind, the body and spirit... the Holy Trinity, and until we do this we will remain an enslaved people. "Your job," the Sprit continued. "...is to plant the seed. You are a modern day griot whose charge is to chronicle the history of my people and point to the future that I have shown to you."
