My dad was a music teacher. One day when I was 7 he brought home this box of weird percussion instruments that I had never seen before, much less played. There were lots of blue crude wooden blocks with sandpaper on the surface and when you rubbed them together it sounded a little like walking through leaves. I also remember the majority of instruments in that box was some variation on a stick. Sticks with bells on the top. Sticks with slats and dents that, oddly enough, sounded cool when you banged them together. Metal sticks bent into a thin "U" with a wooden ball on the bottom and a wooden horn-bell looking thing on the top. Smack the wooden ball against your palm and the air vibrated. I fell in love and I wish I knew where the hell that box was. But you can''t just depend on a box full of sticks and blocks to make you a musician. Luckily, he also brought home guitars, a drum set, this keyboard that you could hook up to a Nintendo and from its guidance learn to play the organ solo from Kansas''s "Point of No Return." In 5th grade I took up the oboe and liked it, but liked the bass guitar better. In 8th grade I realized I liked the 6-string guitar better and played mostly Lemonheads covers. It was wonderful. All hail Evan Dando. In 10th grade my brother and his college friends started a garage band. They needed a bass player and, even though they hated me, they apparently liked my bass playing enough to ask me to join. We weren''t bad; we just couldn''t commit to one moniker. First we were "Salacious Crumb," then we were "Fretting About Nothing," then we were "Jonashead." I almost got kicked out for skipping practice a week before the show to attend a fundamentalist bible camp. In 11th grade my high school friends and I formed a band that easily committed to a moniker ("Pork: The Other White Meat") but only lasted for one practice. Our hit song was "Fu*k the Butcher." In 12th grade my friend Mike and I banged out original Contemporary Christian songs. One was called Tupperware because apparently without God we''re just an empty piece of plastic. In college I was in a weird pseudo-hippy band that surprisingly gathered a bit of a following. Our moniker was so ridiculous that I don''t want to even say it, so I won''t. We broke up for reasons I still haven''t figured out yet. Since then I''ve been a solo artist. I released a full length indie-folk album in 2003 titled "Throwing Caution to the Wind." I''m not sure how well it aged. Ask someone who owns it. Now, I give to you my latest offering: "An Utterance of Frugality." It''s a bit too lovey at times but I think you''ll love it. If you don''t, then give it a few more listens. I recommend "Lady Venus." If you ever see Lady casting moonspells in the Maine backwoods or smoking peyote over a shamble of bent tarot cards in her teeth-yellow trailer, give her a hug for me. Fall to her temptations.
