MP3 Julia Macklin - Half Wild

Delicate, angry, ethereal, haunting, sad, sweet folk pop

9 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Folk Pop, ROCK: Folk Rock

Details:
Voted one of the 12 best do-it-yourself records in the sept/oct issue of PERFORMING SONGWRITER!!

"Julia Macklin is a poet and a lyricist, penning unstructured verses about the forest, the flowers and falling in and out of love. Complex time signatures and unusual instrumentation marked by mellotron, harmonium and lap steel provide the backbone for Macklin''s gentle, melancholic vocals. Former October Project vocalist Marina Belica provides lovely harmonies, especially on the Celtic-flavored "So Much Sky" and the languid "Say Goodbye." The disc concludes with a haunting, ethereal version of "Eleanor Rigby." Ideal staying-in-bed-on-a-rainy-Sunday music."

*****WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HALF WILD (SO FAR!!)*****
"One rare and spectacular release!"
- George Maida, WCVE-FM, Richmond VA

" ''Tea With The Dead'' keeps playing in my head. You can quote me on that!"
- Stewart Brodian, WDIY-FM, Allentown PA

"Julia Macklin ...allows her creativity to make acoustic guitars and her solo voice sound ethereal even as she keeps her feet firmly planted on the ground. There''s a dreamlike feel to her music, but she''s not going to fly off to the heavens at any minute. ''Say Goodbye'' is a gentle song, but it''s carefully holding back a harsher bite. Macklin isn''t all dreamy starshine, although she does like to play with rhythms and time signatures. Her music may be offbeat - in the very best sense of the word. Some of that rougher side comes across on ''Tea with the Dead'' and ''Who Said Anything.'' Its rhythm brings back memories of Annie Haslam and Renaissance. Most of the tracks on Half Wild seem to deal with break-ups, lost love, and loneliness. However, they''re not depressing. On ''Mine,'' she sings ''I fell out of love, out of love - never to be seen again,'' but the number isn''t down beat. There''s a bit of optimism hiding out there, as she states on ''So Much Sky'': ''Today''s ok but I really like tomorrow - a question filled with possibility.'' The final song, a cover of ''Eleanor Rigby,'' another song about lonely people, is austere and curious. The vocals are gentle, and the guitars are acoustic. It''s a strong attempt to make a well-known song her own. Macklin''s own material consists of strong lyrics and musical rhythms that help make them feel like poetry. There''s little distance between the singer and her songs; Macklin is close-up and personal with her audience in terms of musical emotion. She''s definitely a performer to watch.

"Julia Macklin has a stunningly sublime ethereal voice. Her voice has a serene, dreamy, quality that makes you feel as if you are floating with the music. Beautiful guitar, beautiful lyrics, and a beautiful voice are Julia Macklin''s strengths."

*****WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT JULIA''s FIRST ALBUM*****(entitled "Julia Macklin")
"Folk rock from the outskirts of New York. There Julia Macklin seems to make some incredible music. With her lofty voice tenderly caressing your ears with melodies and songs of love, Julia, the poet songstress, is another great find for Hotstuff... "
-- Rick Seigel, https://www.tradebit.com

"Macklin builds her songs around feelings, creating moods that make you feel like you''re floating. Yet, beyond these delicate songs lie lyrics that are honest and revealing and sometimes dark."
-- Chris Kornmann, CMJ New Music Report

"...Viewing songs as melodic poetry, Julia frames reflective images with flowing lyrics that draw the listener into the heart of her world. Dreamy harmonies layered over ephemeral instrumentation result in an alluring tapestry of sound. Julia and Marina''s harmonies are striking and dramatic. This Series has been running for over three years now and listener response to this morning''s show has been one of the strongest."
--Live In Studio Interview: Julia Macklin, WCUW, 91.3, Worcester, MA

"A wag once said that it is forbidden to listen to Leonard Cohen on a sunny day, and Macklin may evoke similar statements, but dare yourself to try. She''s worth the temporary melancholy."
--Robert MacMillan - the Old Town Crier - https://www.tradebit.com

"Macklin''s delicate music draws from many springs: the British folk-rock of Steeleye Span, the progressive panoramas of Kate Bush and Jane Siberry, the tender, sparkling pop of The Sundays and Elizabeth Fraser''s wordless vocalizations. Her five-song debut establishes a dreamy, floating atmosphere... ‘Long Day'' offers a refreshing break; my pick single, it should appeal to Sheryl Crow fans."
