BIO:
Maggie Simpson resides in the Rocky Mountain West, where she is renowned for her powerful and dynamic performance style, her stunning voice, her rhythmic guitar work, and her stories. She grew up in a family of trained actors, musicians, directors and public speakers. She left home at sixteen years old to begin six and a half years of professional training in the performing arts (four and a half of those in Boston University''s Professional Theater Training Program). She followed her training with fifteen years of performance experience in acting, performance art, self-scripting and acoustic music. These elements converge with grace and power in her performance, creating a show that is simple and complex, dramatic and subtle, and singularly Maggie.
Simpson''s music covers a broad range from ethereal, lyrical ballads to hard edged, funk inflected grooves. Her song writing reveals a complex, sophisticated rhythmic and harmonic sense but springs from a raw innocence that keeps if tuneful and accessible. Maggie''s stories are simple but profound; disarmingly unselfconscious. She underscores her performances with a spacious, ''meaty'' and percussive guitar style which, though compelling, remains unobtrusive and like everything else she does, is an equal and integral part of the whole.
Maggie''s support credits include Doc Watson, Richard Shindell, Tom Rush, Martin Sexton, Chris Smither, Patty Larkin, Bela Fleck, Dan Fogelberg, Bill Morrissey, J.J. Cale, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna and Warren Zevon. In addition to performing, Simpson is also a gifted teacher. Her reputation locally and across the country, for her inspiring and celebratory approach to releasing the "ease of excellence" in performance, authenticity and self-expression is on the rise. Four years of rapidly increasing popularity as one of the Planet Bluegrass Annual Folks Festival Song School "performance gurus", has led to her being honored with a permanent home in their select family of instructors.
