Details:
Born and raised in New England, bassist and composer Matt Geraghty is an artist whose musical pursuits have propelled him to explore the musical scenes of Brazil, Spain, France, North Africa, Cuba, and the Philippines. Geraghty''s unique cross-pollination of signature jazz concepts and indigenous global influences has critics praising the music of The Matt Geraghty Project as original, forward thinking, and inventive.

At an early age he studied piano under the Suzuki method and went on to play trumpet during his early years. His true love for music was born out of the sounds of blues and rock, only later studying jazz with virtuoso bassist Brian Torff while attending Fairfield University.

In 1994, Geraghty traveled to the Iberian Peninsula. While living in Spain, he immersed himself in the syncopated rhythms and Gypsy-influenced sounds of traditional Spanish music. Studying Flamenco and the Buleria at the Universidad de Sevilla, he was active in the Sevilla music scene performing regularly with Los Dos de Los Mismo at Cafe Sevilla, Pica La Gartos, El Sol and Blue Moon.

Upon returning to the United States, Geraghty composed for the Fairfield University Jazz Ensemble. His pieces were featured at various concerts, and in December of 1996, Grammy Award-winning drummer Paul Wertico, of the Pat Metheny Group, joined him. Matt was soon awarded the Jazz Performance and Composition Achievement Award by the Fairfield University Music Department.

He then embarked on a full-time collaboration with New Orleans producer/pianist Johnathan Treeby and vocalist/guitarist Renard Boissierre, formerly of the Neville Brothers. With Renard and The Free Lance Pallbearers, he explored an even wider spectrum of music styles indigenous to the Crescent City including zydeco-boogie, second line, brass band, and New Orleans Jazz.

Since moving to Chicago in 1998, Matt has established himself as a sought-after composer, bassist and leader, working with notable musicians Fareed Haque, John Moulder and Paul Wertico. He regularly works with Chicago R&B, funk and jazz vocalist Typhanie Monique and saxophonist Dennis Winslett, as well. In 2002, he released "Two for the Road." (Pica Music) and followed it up in 2003 with "Mozaic," (Pica Music) an acoustic jazz project rich with the sounds of North Africa, Spain, India, and Brazil. He is currently studying with Ryan Cohan and at work on his third CD to be released in 2005.

Geraghty''s talents have been showcased both as a leader and a sideman around the world at La Taberna- Havana, Cuba; Pica La Gartos - Sevilla, Spain; Fuel - New York; Chicago''s Green Mill; Monk''s Dream - Manila; Milwaukee''s Pabst Theater, The University of Chicago Jazz Festival; and The Blue Room in Kansas City. His collaborations include performances with Beyonce drummer Khari Parker, and virtuoso guitarist Fareed Haque. Ongoing collaborations include work with African vocalist and A440 Music Group artist ORNA; Indian Percussionist Kalyan Pathak; and Chicago Samba.

Geraghty''s third CD will be released in the spring of 2005. He performs weekly on Wednesday nights at Uncommon Ground, on Chicago''s northside.
