Matt Swindells

For the last ten years Matt Swindells has enjoyed a successful career as a freelance drummer. He is a versatile musician, playing drums in a variety of Jazz, Latin, Rock, Hip Hop and Punk bands. More recently Matt has also completed several UK and international tours with UK-based Electronica pioneers ‘Fila Brazillia’.

Drumming, however, is only one facet of Matt’s musicianship. Matt is also an original and accomplished singer songwriter. His debut CD ‘Matt Swindells’ is now available on this website. All titles are written and produced by Matt, who also plays most of the instruments on the album including: drums, vocals, guitar, keys and programming.

In addition to his own recording projects, Matt Swindells has recently performed lead vocals on ‘Raising Lazarus’, a guitar-driven rock album written and produced by ace bassist Matt Bissonette. This CD – which also features Gregg Bissonnette on drums and includes Matt Swindells’ song ‘In My Pockets’ – can be purchased by following the Matt Bissonette links at: https://www.tradebit.com

History

Matt Swindells was always going to be a drummer – at age 3 he was already constructing his own drum kits out of pots, pans and other culinary implements on the kitchen floor. Growing up in a music-loving family in the north of England, Matt started to learn the piano at age 7, finally getting his first real drum kit two years later. He went on to study music at Salford University where he gained a place in the renowned ‘Salford University Big Band’ under the direction of Robin Dewhurst.

After graduating from college Matt began his professional career as a musician. He has subsequently gone on to perform with a wide variety of artists, playing in local bars and clubs as well as in some of the world’s top music venues. Drumming for Manchester-based funk and hip hop outfits including ‘Batsocats’, ‘Future Shock’, ‘Mixedup’ and the ‘Simon Mullcaster Trio’, Matt has also been invited to play alongside international ‘stars’ such as Australian multi-instrumental jazz virtuoso James Morrison. Matt recalls that accompanying James Morrison was particularly memorable as it involved a gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall in front of 4000 people without any rehearsal!

Other noteworthy gigs include taking part in the first ever live trans-Atlantic Internet gig with the US-UK based rock band ‘Wirewood’ and, in complete contrast, playing in a Roman Amphitheater in Cyprus with the soul band ‘Frisco Crab and The Atlantic Frantics’. It is the dressing room that made an impression on this latter occasion. Matt describes it as a “biblical looking three-thousand year old fort with giant ants”.

In 1999 and 2000 Matt was approached by Electronica pioneers ‘Fila Brazillia’ and asked to drum with their live touring band the ‘Fila Brazillia Sextet’. A UK tour to promote the ‘Touch of Cloth’ album was followed by dates in Europe and Japan. Highlights included gigs at Leeds, Reading, Lowlands (Holland) and Fuji Rock Festivals, and a live session for Giles Peterson on BBC Radio One.

Matt joined ‘Fila Brazillia’ again in 2002 for a UK tour to promote the ‘Jump Leads’ album. This time, after a sell out performance at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire, the band went on to tour across the US and Canada before returning to play European summer festivals at Glastonbury, Cannes and Istanbul. Matt particularly enjoyed the final gig: a headline performance at ‘The Big Chill’ event.

In 2002 Matt relocated from Manchester UK to San Francisco. Since then he has been focusing on writing and recording his own material and showcasing his vocal talents and guitar playing in California and the UK. So far audiences have been highly appreciative and Matt has already received interest from leading session musicians and record companies.
