WORLD: Native American, NEW AGE: Healing

Details:
Wayne McCleskey and Joan Johannes met at a Renaissance of the Native American Flute Workshop seven years ago. Since that time they have been collaborating both in composition and in playing duets. Both love close harmonies, the sound of two flutes together, and the intuitive connection they feel when they play each other''s songs and the songs they arrange together. Because this connection is so important to them and to the energy in the music, each song was recorded together rather than by combining tracks. Since they live 1500 miles apart, this was only possible by making Seattle the hub for Joan''s travel for over a year: Helena by way of Seattle, Alaska by way of Seattle, and just plain Seattle to get the recording just the way they wanted it.

Equally passionate about NA flute playing and composing, Wayne and Joan had numerous songs available from which to choose so they could carefully construct a song list which expresses the happiness that the flute can capture along with the mediative charm of the instrument. In addition, they have included two songs for NA flute and voice which feature the beautiful voice of Jane Horton, a multi-talented musician who shared their Renaissance of the Native American Flute experience in
1997. Since both Wayne and Joan write in the R Carlos Nakai TABlature system, they are able to share their music with each other across the miles, with Jane in Montana, and also with other flute players; and because of this sharing of music in TABlature, both Wayne and Joan have been honored with the R Carlos Nakai medallion presented by Nakai. Wayne''s written music includes "A Kokopelli Christmas", "Under One Sky", "Kokopelli Finger Chart Vol. 1" and "A Kokopelli Circle of Friends" and Joan has songs in "A Kokopelli Circle of Friends" and "The INAFA Songbook, Volume 1" in addition to recently publishing four duets for flute and voice which are available in sheet music.

A poet as well as a songwriter, Joan''s lyrics are included in "A
Kokopelli Christmas" and her poetry is in the NA songbook, "Feathered Pipe Memories" by Carl Blunts and in "The Voice of the Wind", the publication of the International Native American Flute Association. She has published numerous poems in magazines, andthologies, and literary journals, published two chapbooks, and won both the Triad Contest and the Trophy poem contests sponsored by WI Fellowship of Poets. She has also received honorable mentions in those contests, as well as in contests sponsored by The Writers'' Place, WI Academy of Letters and
Sciences, and "English Journal". Wisconsin''s Secondary Teacher of the Year, as well as winner of the Chisholm Award for the Exemplary Teaching of English and a Kohl Fellowship for teaching, Joan presents workshops to adults as well as students using the flute and poetry. Her most recent presentation was a performance of songs and poems inspired by birds for the International Bird Art Show in Wausau, WI. More information is available at https://www.tradebit.com.

Wayne is a Marriage and Family Therapist, who understands the way the Native American Flute''s sounds affect the human spirit. There is a quality of the sound that touches something deep inside of us and brings a sense of peace, harmony and balance to us. He has a private practice in Seattle, but considers that his "day job"!
