Many words have been to used describe Denise McIlwain, but none more fitting than the word songbird. To her singing is as much apart of life as is eating. Those who know her or those who have met her even as she strolled through the grocery store, were struck by the lovely sounds they heard. Denise McIlwain was born to sing; gifted with a voice created to please God. Born in Brooklyn, New York where she lived for the first few years of her life. The family later moved to Schenectady, N. Y., and at age nine to Rotterdam, N. Y., a small suburb just outside Schenectady. During her junior high school years she began singing in the school choir. In her last year of Junior High School, she got a duet part. She always loved to sing and even had dreams of becoming a famous singer one day. However, all those dreams seemed to be lost when she became pregnant at the age of 17.
In 1994, she met her current husband Minister Jeffrey McIlwain. They have one child together which added to the other three children. She thought that she would never be able to have her dream with four children, but that same year she gave her life to Christ and started singing in the choir at Interdenominational Church of God.
She did not want to change churches, but soon discovered that it was all a part of God''s plan for her to go to Grace Tabernacle Fellowship Church, in 2000. She believed for a long time that just going to Sunday school, Bible Study, Prayer Meeting and being a member of the choir was enough; she soon found out that it was not enough. The Lord allowed her to be more active in the church.
In the summer of 2002, the Lord gave her what she thought was a poem. It was called "Sometimes I Wonder," she later sang it for several of her friends who encouraged her to record it, but she was too afraid to try. So she held on to the song for a few months while she considered what to do. By November she wanted to do it, and with the help of the Lord and Minister Wydell Croom she was able.
A faith walk is what she calls this project, because the Lord provided everything she needed to do it. Denise knows that she is blessed that the Lord would allow her to sing His praises and worship. Denise currently attends Evangel Theological Seminary, where it is said, "If you will make the sacrifice to prepare, the Lord will bless your ministry." Denise is preparing for the mighty move of God. Her willingness to be used in song as well as a prophetic vessel is inspiring.
