Singer/songwriter/guitarist with jazz/blues/folk undertones. Folk Hendrix.

11 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Folk Pop, BLUES: Jazzy Blues

Details:
LJM is originally from Maine, then lived in Louisiana, on to California, then to New York. His music is blend of urban sophistication and rootsy ruralness, a melting pot of Irish poetry, delta guitar, late night jazz, and Motown. His songs have been recorded by such great singers as Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley, Chaka Khan, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker etc. He performs regularly as a solo artist and with a trio. This CD includes demos, collaborations between LJM & Leni Stern, a rare instrumental, LJM"s first song written with the Dobro, never released songs, rare versions of LJM favorites, and an out-take from his debut album.

The first time I heard the name Larry John McNally was from the mouth of Bonnie Raitt, who covered two of his songs, yet still this special singer-songwriter from Maine is more known by his fellow musicians than he is by the big public. Lots of artists have covered his songs, from Aaron Neville, Chaka Khan and The Staple Singers to Nicolette Larson, Joe Cocker and Rod Stewart. His own output is extremely modest. McNally is also in his extremely sober, modelled music, a quiet force. With "LOOSE ENDS" he clears up his own archives; demos from behind the kitchen table, jazzy songs with the Leni Stern Band and other songs that remained shelved. All this makes the seemingly unforced approach of his songs only stronger. McNally never forces anything on you and isn''t a singer-songwriter of the belly-button-staring type. He comes always immediately to the point in his hypnotising beautiful songs, which don''t need any bells and whistles to drag you in.
***** 5/13/2000 Herman van der Horst, Oor Magazine, The Netherlands *****

"LOOSE ENDS" is a welcome collection of demos, out-takes, and even a home recording from one of America''s best songwriters. It offers a nice view into Larry John McNally''s creative process and highlights not only his writing, but his tender vocals and very under-rated guitar playing.
McNally has had his songs covered by the likes of Joe Cocker, Chaka Khan, Aaron Neville, Bonnie Raitt, Mavis Staples, Rod Stewart, Jennifer Warnes, and most recently Don Henley. He''s also had a history as a recording artist in his own right, having released albums on major labels ARC/Columbia, Atlantic and on his own.
But it is his recent work with fellow DIY artist Leni Stern that brought this collection into being. The two worked closely together on her "BLACK GUITAR" album, which he produced, played guitars on, added vocals, and contributed songs to. "LOOSE ENDS" features songs the two did together. It''s obvious they share a creative spark.
Here''s hoping these songs are heard and appreciated - not only on their own merit as they appear here, but also that others will discover and record them as well.
Songs stay alive like that.
***** January/February 2000, John Porter, Performing Songwriter

Larry John McNally is a sophisticated, blues-based singer/songwriter. This album of unrelated songs is "loose ends" collected by McNally as the first non-Leni Stern album on Leni''s record label. These two have had a fruitful history of studio collaboration in the past. It is McNally''s "Black Guitar" that became a title track to one of Leni''s albums. Alternating between sad and dark, there is a tangible longing and melancholy worldview propagated through McNally''s album. His material, often sparsely played on the guitar, comes across as naked emotion and heartfelt observation. The strength of his material is in emotional impact that directly translates from McNally''s experiences through this album and on to the listener. McNally is a singer/songwriter that effectively communicates real feeling through his songs. ~ Tom Schulte,**** All Music Guide ****

review From MISS ZIGGY''s Webpage, Leeuwarden, Holland

Niets is echter minder waar. Bijvoorbeeld over zijn jeugd in ''Tar On The Roof'': Man, the tar on the roof was still hot - From the heat of the day - Well, I''m laying up here thinking things over - Trying to clear my head.
