Like A Martyr’s versatile sound is influenced by the raw power of Motorhead, by the stripped down blues of Muddy Waters, by the simplistic stomp of the White Stripes, by the rock n roll swagger of Bruce Springsteen and by the lyrical depth of Buck 65.
The band’s first full-length release, entitled “The North”, is a collection of songs that reflects the diverse nature of the members themselves. It is somber and exuberant, tenacious and vulnerable. It is raucous and reflective, emotional and blunt.
Like A Martyr’s debut effort is a walking contradiction; a series of dualities rolled into a beautifully dirty package of powerful and memorable rock tunes. While Motley Cruesque shout-outs in the track “Lapper” mindlessly proclaim “Schnee! Blow! Ho!”, the haunting string section of “Empires Fall” imbues feelings of religious introspection and pending epiphany. Meanwhile, “And By Coffee I Mean Drugs” stomps classically through an endless Las Vegas binge, as “Elizabeth” and “The North” use metaphor and apostrophe to address feelings of anxiety and desolation.
Like A Martyr is an anxiety-driven neurotic, striving for perfection, drinking and laughing all the while. Like A Martyr is thumping, clapping, pulsating, kicking, screaming, falling, rejoicing, staggering and stomping to their rightful place in the rock n roll mosaic.
Like A Martyr’s first full-length release, “The North” is due for release September 12th, 2008.
