Slim Stephenson Biography

Born Timothy Stephenson in Boulder Colorado ‘Slim’ was raised in Denver Colorado and found early success playing guitar and singing in his high school rock combo. This teeny-bop band called “The U.S. Male” at one time had as many as 5oo members in their fan club, largely due to the fact that they won a couple “Battle of the Bands” competition in the mid 60’s.

Influenced by “folk-rock” he started writing songs in his late teens and has pursued a career performing original music. He has always written in a variety of musical styles Rock, Country, Bluegrass, Rhythm & Blues, Funk and Blues. Often ahead of the pack, always writing and performing in different genre’s such as the hard rockin’ “Shotgun,” the critically acclaimed country bluegrass group “Deputy Dawg,” the funky “Wildtones” and the heavy metal band, “Hard Luck Kid” long before they became popular trends and fads in the 70’s & 80’s.

He and some good friends produced their first music video in Colorado and were featured alongside the pop videos of the time on local radio and television programs.

In the early 70’s he married his high school sweetheart started a family (two sons, excellent drummers by the way) and switched from guitar to bass because of the chronic shortage of bassists, a trend that continues today. He was always able to find work as a bass player but writes and performs his original material on guitar.

One of his big passions in life is multitrack recording. Slim is quoted as saying, “It is the ultimate of art forms and it starts with and idea or title; add a chord progression and lyrics or vice versa, create a song structure and you’re ready to record your own hit song. But it’s harder than it sounds!”

His musical career has been the typical musician’s life of “feast or famine.” While living in Colorado he was able to make a comfortable living playing part-time at clubs and ski resorts throughout the Rocky Mountain area and even played some tours as far west as Japan. While in Japan his band was the opening act that toured the country for a teenage girl roller-skating ensemble that played amusement parks and summer beach resorts. During his stay in Japan he was constantly being mistaken as a certain member of the world famous Rolling Stones. Being a regular “American Pop Singer” didn’t stop adoring Japanese rock fans from asking for autographs and photos.

As a performer Slim has shared the stage with many notable acts & artists including The Young Rascals, Music Explosion, Sugarloaf, Firefall, Hot Tuna, Chris Hillman Band, John Sebastian, Michael Martin Murphy and Foghat.

In the early 90’s Slim gravitated to Nashville, Tennessee and the thriving music scene. For fifteen years he has continued to record and perform as a sideman backing numerous local country and bluegrass artists such as The Lowry Sisters, Tennessee Reel Time, Adrienne’s Child, blues artist Donnie Miller & Rude Awakening, rock artists The Fun Kings and Americana artist Daniel Glenn Timms.

Slim continues to record and perform his own original compositions including a recent demo of one of his tunes with his son Luke on drums and his grandson Darien on bass and vocals – three generations of rockers.

The release of ‘Who Needs Cable With A Life Like Mine?’ marks Slim’s first solo CD effort and contains insightful commentaries on the plights of life faced by everyone weaved into the tapestry of blues roots rock and roll with an occasional country rock feel bordering on hard rock.

Slim currently resides with his beautiful second wife, Tammy, and their faithful German Sheppard, Muffin, in Mount Juliet, Tennessee.
