Although Charlie gratefully acknowledges the influence and inspiration of guitar greats from Joe Satriani and Jimi Hendrix to Phil Keaggy and Carlos Santana, the West Virginia musician claims that a strong melody is essential to his music. “I was greatly influenced by the stylistic melodies, harmonies and chord structures of the Beatles and the Eagles,” Charlie says, “and even though I hope my style is unique, the spirit of those groups permeates my songs.”
Switching easily from Beatlesque acoustic-driven pop to instrumental electric guitar artistry, Charlie has a lyrical approach that has made many fans as well. Thoughtful yet positive words flow melodically in tunes crafted to match the lyrics’ emotional and spiritual content.
Charlie’s first solo CD “read between the lines” (2004) made fans, and garnered reviews, from all over the U.S. as well as overseas – including Ireland, Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, and the U.K. That particular CD was an all-instrumental electric guitar songfest, but in the “Press” album a broader spectrum comes into play: soaring and imaginative guitar solos are still in abundance, but keyboards, acoustic guitar, vocal harmonies, violin, and even banjo enhance this six-song musical offering as well.
“I’m a fan of guitar in all its forms,” Charlie says, “and that instrument will feature prominently in all my compositions – but I don’t want it to overshadow the essence of a solid, melodic song.” Reviews have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic since the August 2008 release of the CD, and “Press” has shown yet more angles to the talent of this veteran of the vibrant Ohio rock scene of the 70’s, who is already planning and writing for his next album.
