Kat Larios’ vocals have an intriguing and haunting quality that sets her apart from everything. The guitarist featured on this album is Grasshopper from Mercury Rev. who naturally does an outstanding job, and a there are also a few tracks featuring cellist Jane Scarpantoni who has been featured on albums by Lou Reed, R.E.M., and 10,000 Maniacs. But it’s Larios’ ghostly voice that stands out on this record. Her voice is one of a kind, the songs are all incredible, the lyrics indifferent yet desperate and meaningful all at once.
Born in a bitter blizzard and brought up in a pretty ghetto, Kat Larios is no stranger to drastic variety. Her collection of songs is a haphazard mixbag tinged with familiar flavors, delivered in an unfamiliar package.
