Recorded in Chicago, the Catskills and the West of Ireland, Malastrana is graced by guest appearances ranging from indie-rockers Ben Massarella (Califone), Gillian Lissée (Fruit Bats), and Libby Reed (Coat), Americana stalwarts Bob Egan (Wilco) and Jacob Stern (Crunchy Western Boys), future-folkies Aerin Tedesco and Andrea Bunch (Congress of Starlings), and Chicago jazz flutist Nicole Mitchell. The Irish side of the story includes performances by string players Marja Tuhkanen and Bertrand Galen, fresh from their Academy Award winning contribution to Falling Slowly from the Once soundtrack, Dublin drummer Wayne Sheehy (Jeff Martin) and West Cork traditional singer Breeda Murphy. Rounding out the musical cast of characters is a core group of musicians who have collaborated with Kenny Dread for centuries, and are among his very best friends: singers Brian Parks and Iain Burrell, singer-songwriter Craig Rosen, pianist D Bayne and bassist Claude "Shaggy" Bauschinger.
