Details:
Halifax’s most consistently innovative keyboardist, composer and producer was born and raised in Prince Edward Island. Filtered though his love of rock, early funk and soul and modern electronic music, this classically trained pianist’s sound and style has become synonymous with the name Aaron Collier. His musical beginnings started almost immediately, at the age of two, making public performances frequently and winning many awards including a silver medal for the highest Royal Conservatory Exam grade in Atlantic Canada. Collier continued to study and perform while playing keyboards and bass in several bands in junior high. Mid-way through high school his focus shifted and he instinctively knew where is heart lay -- there would be no turning back.
In 2001 Collier became the keyboardist for international touring and recording artists The Jimmy Swift Band. The distinct self-defining genre of Rocktronica JSB has created is due in large part to Collier’s integral role in the band. Seven years later JSB continues touring, selling out shows and pushing through the boundaries of the music industry. To date they have released three studio albums, one live album and are set to release their first live DVD in the fall of 2008.
…”Aaron Collier helps take (JSB) instrumentals such as ‘astronauts attempting to Take off Their Space Suits That They May Copulate’ to dizzying orgasmic heights. This cat just plain gives’er”…Stephen Richardson (LilaLicious Reviews)
Collier, who relocated to Toronto, Ontario in the fall of 08, truly is a man of dedication to his craft; his reputation and selflessness for being the musician that he is has impelled demand for his talents of composing, producing and playing on a variety of diverse projects. When he is not performing with JSB or recording in the studio with the likes of Bruce Gouthro, Nick Eede and other world class artists, Aaron can be seen playing as a member of “looping madness duo” Scientists of Sound, an emerging band rooted in dance music and crazy experimental sounds who have generated a buzz with their avant-garde performances. He has also been known to share the stage with established Halifax DJ Nick Nonsense where they create organic and improvised dance music featuring Nick on three turntables and Aaron surrounded by his keyboard rig and a variety of electronics. Together Collier and his colleagues share an innate sense on how to make people move effortlessly.
On the composing front, Collier’s work is often showcased as he is the resident composer and sound designer for Halifax theatre troupe Angels and Heroes. To date he has worked on six shows with the company including the acclaimed “Fewer Emergencies”, “Oh Dad, Poor Dad...” and “The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek”.
In the mix of his numerous musical projects and studio sessions, Collier has managed to stay true to his own musical compositions. In 2005 he produced and individually hand made his first e.p. “Islands” and is now set to release his first full length electronic album “Love” which has been in the making over the past 2 years. “Love”, which contains not a single typical love song, is based on the love of life and its richness, from the love of science to the unloved. The album is sonically lush, driven by electronic beats and thriving on dense and thoughtful ambience. The eight tunes offer up a variety of themes on love as the album evocatively depicts a picture of a young adult’s life.
