Tom Szczesniak (Piano/Bass)
Ken Kakoullis (Bouzouki)
Athan Katsos (Bass/Piano/Composer)

Explore new music territory created and composed by bassist and keyboardist ATHAN KATSOS. It’s inspirational to hear these famed Jazz musicians perform Athan’s blend of jazz with traditional Greek music forms like the Zeyebikiko,
Kalamatiano, Tsamiko, and Kleftiko.

Athan’s melodic gift creates music that flows easily and captures the essence of both blending the ancient middle-eastern music tradition with chord patterns of contemporary Jazz music. Athan says, “Jazz musicians often use the montouno when playing the ‘odd’ rhythms. I leap
from the harmonically static montouno to unleash those ‘odd’ beats with jazz ‘two-five’ chord patterns and propel my compositions into a new world.”

Athan attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music and completed studies as a drummer, bassist, and composer/arranger. Praised for his compositional skills at Berklee, he won the bass chair in the student main big band ensembles.

Moving to Toronto, he expanded his scope with music and television credits as producer/director/writer on major music programs. He’s written and arranged for recordings, television, radio and commercials. TV highlights extend from Anne Murray, Staple Singers, David Clayton-Thomas, Maple Music, Basie, Goodman, Peterson to Yanni At The Acropolis.

Athan recalls: “I had emergency surgery due to a life-altering major heart attack last year, given only a 20% chance of survival. But I quickly rallied, survived and promised myself to recommit to music. I took on a project⎯a gig performing only my own compositions with the greatest musicians anywhere. Wow, what a dream job. I wrote and copied music. I designed art work. I had help, though. My wife Linda never said ‘Get a real job!’ Instead she encouraged and contributed. Sadie, my 89 year-old mother-in-law insisted on managing the door. Lesley Mitchell-Clarke edited and sent out promos. Jon Long arranged the post-production, distribution and the musicians rehearsed.

The day finally arrived. Would the people show? While setting up for the gig, climbing up the iron back stairs at the “Swan” carrying metal mic stands, a thunder and lightning storm broke out and I was a human lightning rod. How ironic, possible electrocution after all the work and surviving major heart surgery! But people came, filled the house, cheered and we got a CD. I hope you like it too.”
