A solo project set up by C P Boland in early 2004 dubbed, “The Icarus Machine” has come to fruition with the debut album entitled “A World Of Saints And Sorrows”. As an independent artist on a lower budget than most signed musicians, most of the album was recorded in a small dusty box room in southern England over 2007 and 2008. By contrast to most modern albums rushed to the shelves, the project was completed steadily over 5 years with the last year consisting of finally putting material together, recording and mixing.
C P Boland:
“The album itself deals with the perspectives we have of the world, for example on a very basic level we have good and bad, but whatever you want to visualize it as the contrast lies there between the tracks. Most of the songs on there aren’t sad and despondent as the title suggests. Although some parts take on a similar mood, I’d says its more of a melancholy feel rather than despair. So each song represents an experience and an attitude or issue, most of which I think are overlooked. For example, one of my favourite tracks on the album is “James”, which tells the story of a young police officer who, despite doing his best to protect everyone, is set upon by a gang of thugs and tragically dies later in hospital, hence the lyrics “soaking down hospital floors”. So I suppose that song represents a sharp sadness and anger in the album, but there are many more happy tunes that balance it out, which is important in any music that someone puts together. What the album means in a final message is up to anyone who wants to interpret it, I think it lays out a set of messages which people can either choose to look at individually or as a whole and make up their minds about.
