MP3 Fred Moolten - Moonlit River

A mix of haunting acoustic blues, late night mood music, and catchy rhythms

5 MP3 Songs
BLUES: Acoustic Blues, EASY LISTENING: Mood Music

Details:
A brilliant sequel to Fred Moolten''s extraordinary debut album, "The Way We Are", "Moonlit River" serves up a compelling mix of haunting blues, late night dreaminess, and catchy rhythm that testifies to the depth and breadth of his artistic vision. Moolten is not himself a performer, but it hardly matters here. Lisa Hindmarsh and Rodan Weikert not only sing well, but more importantly for a Moolten song, they sing expressively. Nor does it hurt that the acoustic guitar work on this CD comes from Ernie Hawkins, a student of the late blues guitar legend Reverend Gary Davis. Hawkins himself has been called "one of the most accomplished and impressive blues guitarists of our time", and listeners to the title song "Moonlit River", will have no difficulty understanding why. Max Leake (piano), Brian Stahurski (bass), and Pete Freeman (dobro, pedal steel) are other notable performers, as is Nelson Harrison - a trombonist and inventor of the trombetto, which he solos on "Last Dance". Dino DiStefano is the sound engineer, as he was for the 1997 Grammy Award winning performance by the Count Basie Orchestra (Nelson Harrison also toured with Basie). All in all, an illustrious group, and an impressive new album.

"Some of the best independently recorded blues that I''ve heard in a while" (Tammy Childs - THE DAILY VAULT)

"Hindmarsh kicks off the EP with SOMEDAY BLUES...Hawkins on guitar and Weikert on harmonica give it that inimitable blues feel. CANDLE GLOW... is a real late-night smoocher, with some lovely piano work by Leake... WAITING FOR THE MIDNIGHT BLUES...Harrison''s trombone provides some soul-searching notes...Hindmarsh''s vocals...get good and gritty in this emotive number... LAST DANCE...a fluffier song with soft lyrics, delightfully delivered... MOONLIT RIVER...soulful... The lyrics, all written by Moolten, are original, poetic, and touching; happy or sorrowful, they each have a certain poignancy which makes them memorable. This is a lovely CD, and tempts the listener to hear more from all the featured talents." (Jenny Ivor - RAMBLES)

Some lyric excerpts are quoted below (for complete lyrics, please visit the Fred Moolten website):

"I wait each night for sleep to come, lying beside an empty space
Sleep comes at last, but still I have the blues" (SOMEDAY BLUES)

"I''ll skip the wine, but I''ll take the kiss" (CANDLE GLOW)

"Blues my companion ''til the dawn" (WAITING FOR THE MIDNIGHT BLUES)

"Are we just pretending, or when this night is ending
Will the morning sun find you still with me?" (LAST DANCE)

"I''m going to go back where we once walked by the Moonlit River
I''m going to lie on the soft, wild grass where I lay with you" (MOONLIT RIVER)
