Details:
Phil’s long musical career began in 1966 when his older brothers let him play drums behind them on the dock at their summer home at Lake George, NY. Phil’s Mom noticed that he seemed to have a talent for the drums and bought him his first drumkit the following Christmas. The rest, as they say, is history. Phil played drums in bands through junior and senior high school; with lots of gigs at school dances back in the days before DJs became popular. The music of The Allman Brothers, Jeff Beck, Hendrix and The Stones made up just a portion of the music Phil played drums to back in the day. Along the way he picked his brother’s old acoustic guitar and began learning to strum and fingerpick. These were the days when players like James Taylor, Stephan Stills, Ian Anderson and Jimmy Page were once again bringing the acoustic to the forefront on the current musical scene.
Though he continued playing drums after high school, Phil’s interest in the guitar continued to grow and it wasn’t long before gigs at small bars and coffeehouses were happening more than those playing drums. The acoustic and electric guitar became the focus of Phil’s musical energy through the 80s and 90s with different folk groups and The Corning Grassworks, a bluegrass band that has kept performing to this day; with the highlight of their musical career being a trip to the former Soviet Union to perform as part of a “sister-cities” exchange program. And playing electric guitar led to being the leader of a reggae and rock band that was one of the most popular and busy club bands (spanning close to ten years) in Phil’s area from the early 90s into the new millennium.
Phil caught the recording bug in the mid 90s and bought a four track cassette recorder which led to an eight track reel-to-reel, which then led to two eight track ADATS and a pile of gadgets and outboard gear. Phil’s currently released CD project “I’m Not Just Folkin’ Around” is a compilation of original songs inspired by everything from love, loss, loved ones moving away and a road trip on Interstate 95 heading south to Florida. A few favorite cover songs are include too because Phil feels that some folks like to hear how musicians interpret others peoples stuff, and it’s nice to have something familiar that might catch someone’s eye.
Phil’s second release, “Loves’ Open Road” is well under way and should be ready for release by Christmas 2009.
