Dear Listener,
In an effort to keep this brief bio light-hearted, as I know it would be a real drag to read about each hurtful struggle I’ve faced, I’ll save the graphic details for the full-length Dani Shay autobiography. Come on, we just met. ;) You can simply know for now that this synopsis, while accurate and charming, is only barely scraping the surface.
I was born and raised in Orlando, Florida- “The Sunshine State”- and even from infancy, I displayed a definite interest not only in music, but all forms of art. In my adolescence, my whimsical imagination got me into trouble both at school and home. I was far more fascinated with my sketches and stories than memorizing dates and other useless information. Well! This, of course, led me to a number of those dreaded Parent-Teacher Conferences. “She’s just not applying herself,” the teachers would say. “She is a pleasure to have in class, but she has a hard time focusing on the subject matter sometimes.” In retrospect, I applaud my little kid self for being so creative in, what is often times, such a mind-numbing place! Onward…
When I was 6, my parents divorced, my Mom remarried, and then she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In other words, we became Mormons. Now, I’ll start by saying that most of the rumors spread about the LDS church are false or slightly twisted, and almost all the people I grew up around were just darling. However, being such a free spirit, I had a really hard time making sense of the perfectly predetermined, mapped-out lifestyle the leaders there strongly suggested I follow. So, needless to say after that preface, I parted ways with the church and embarked on what has been one hell of a journey!
When I was 15, my Mom (who is an angel, by the way) bought me a nylon-stringed, classic acoustic guitar for my birthday. I was very busy in high school though, as I was highly involved in the theatre program, so I didn’t learn to play my first guitar chord until I was 17. That was also the year I left school early, moved out of my parents’ house, and realized that if I were going to be true, I needed to separate myself from religion. Through the struggles that came along with that decision, and other experiences, I started writing. Doing so led me to quickly realize what I had been missing out on- a whole world of expression- and knew that it would change my life.
Since then, 3 short years have passed and I have written nearly 30 songs. “Free! The EP”© is my first offering to the public and features 6 of those songs. Each track is laced with my raw poetic flavor, making them easy for anyone to relate to. Close your eyes and listen. I hope you enjoy… And, if you do, there’s more where that came from!!!
