The Central American nation of Costa Rica is an ecologically rich country that is home to some of
the world''s most vibrant rainforests and unique animal populations. As one journeys from the
Pacific to the Caribbean coasts, they pass through deciduous woodlands, mist-covered cloud
forests that hug the sides of active volcanoes, arid plains, and deep jungles, lagoons, swamps and
estuaries that echo with the cacophony of abundant wildlife.
Costa Rica''s emerald landscape has been threatened in recent years by rampant deforestation and
insensitive development. Over the years much of the country''s rainforests have been chopped down
to convert the land for agricultural use. Fortunately, many environmental groups both local and
international have stepped in to help preserve the existing rainforests and promote their regrowth.
Ecotourism has flourished, enabling Costa Ricans to gain economic benefits from their natural
resources by preserving them. Guadalupe Urbina was born in the western Guanacaste province, the youngest of ten children in a rural household. Her upbringing gave her a deep appreciation for the natural environment and respect for her local culture. Her evocative poetry and passionate singing has led her to great local fame as well as a healthy international reputation, especially in Europe, where she now resides.
“Pais Azul (Blue Country)” is a tribute to her native region, and its evocative use of the marimba, a traditional wooden-keyed xylophone from the province with antecedents in both Native American and West African cultures. “To my Guanacaste home / To its sun / To its women made of clay / With their colorful dresses / To the black sands, the savanna / The unforgettable tortillas and tamales / To its cedars and to its noble history / What a winged and incredible land.”
SONGS AND COMPOSITIONS
The quality of her words and the depth of her thoughts have opened doors to important stages in Europe and Latin America. She is able to recognize herself in her own history as a Costa Rican, a MesoAmerican, and a Latin American.
Her repertoire is extremely wide and varied: original songs, anonymous songs and texts from the province of Guanacaste in the north of Costa Rica. In addition she has created sound tracks for theatre, children''s performances, documentary videos and staged musicals.
Guadalupe''s artistic career has enriched over the years. Today she is well known for her folk traditional research as well as a singer-song writer. But her songs and poetic prose are a philosophy of life, inherited from her mother and her native area Sardinal de Carrillo, in Guanacaste.
Guadalupe’s songs find root in the life she experienced and remembers well of her early childhood in the province of Guanacaste. As no other she understands the hardships of agricultural life, remembering how hard her mother worked to take care of her children, her home and her land. It is therefore no wonder that Guadalupe can be found present in events that are about World Peace, Amnesty International, Women’s Liberation and Human Rights. In 1988, she performed at the National Stadium in Costa Rica with Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel and Youssou N’Dour.
Guadalupe’s work has enriched over the years. Apart from her musical carreer, she is well known for her folk tradional research. In 1994 Guadalupe was given ‘The Gaviota of Ibero-America Prize’ and in 1995, she received “The America Prize” in Senegal, Africa given by Radio France International and performed again with Youssou N’Dour and Lokua Kanza.
Listening to Guadalupe’s voice is like being surrounded by a musical fantasy. She plays with her vocal chords, producing high and deep sounds that makes her audience feel, even if you do not understand every single word, the intensity of her feelings.
