Untiring traveller, magic and poetry in words, music and drawings

Guadalupe Urbina has a long name, a profound name, it sounds like the wolves of her songs and has echoes of myths that populate and travel through tropic jungles. This isn’t something arbitrary, she has inherited all of this from a family, which by tradition, loved afternoon storytelling, guitars and everyday social gatherings. Born in the Costa Rican province of Guanacaste, which borders with Nicaragua, her ancestros come from this land. She is the youngest of a family of 10 children and fixed in her memory are her childhood and mother, whose influence has been one of her most important sources of inspiration. It was her mother who introduced her to oral tradition through stories, songs and rhythms of the province.
Guadalupe became a traveller from 1987, after her successful participation in the Latin American Festival in Utrecht, Holland. She has represented her people through the interpretation of traditional music and her own compositions in Latin and North America, Europe and Africa. She made an appearance 1990 in North America at the Vancouver Music Folk Festival in Vancouver, Canada. In 1995, she was invited to New York to participate in the 5th Annual One Woman Show Festival, held during the month that celebrates the history of women.
In Latin America she has appeared in festivals in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela. In 1988 she performed along side Bruce Springteen, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel and Yousou N’Dour in Costa Rica in the Human Rights Now tour, sponsored by Amnesty International. In 1989 she was invited to the Festival del Caribe in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
In 1995, she won the Premio América in the Concurso de Los Descubrimientos convoked by Radio France International; the award was awarded during a concert in Dakkar, Senegal where once again she had the opportunity to sing together with Yousou N’Dour.
Guadalupe resides in Holland since 1996. Working non-stop, she continues to produce and strenthen ties with Latin America, Costa Rica and Guanacaste, which have lent her to us for a while in order to teach us about different colors, sounds, passions and above all, the love for life.
Aside from her musical career, Guadalupe is also known for her story-telling and as a researcher and interpreter of traditional music from her province of Guanacaste. In 1994 she won the Premio Gaviota for her work in Oral Narration and has performed in festivals in Mexico, Spain, Colombia, the United States and Holland.
At the end of 2003 she presented her book "Al Menudeo: cuentos, poemas, canciones, mitos y oraciones" in Madrid, and in December 2002 she presented a book of children’s stories, “Benito, Pánfila y el perro garrobero”, which was editited by Cosmovisiones/books, in Costa Rica.
Most recently, Guadalupe has been taking a break in her heavy schedule of live concerts and presentations to dedicate her time to the development of new passions: storywriting and fine arts. Guadalupe has new plans for the future with regard to her paintings and drawings (which illustrate this website).

*Winner of America’s Prize 1995 Discoveries Contest, this Costa Rican vocalist boasts a degree in music and is her composer her singer song-writer. She draws inspiration from the popular melodies and poetry of Costa Rica in order to perpetuate local tradition. The authenticy of her voice has won respect and sparked growing interest. Guadalupe Urbina has begun to make a name for herself. Europe will shortly discover this cross between Joan Baez and Tracy Chapman, thanks a new disc that is in records stores.
Radio France International, Paris, France

* The Costarican Guadalupe Urbina has an original, sensitive, torn voice, with a great capacity to get into the path of the most innovative anglosaxon female composers and singers, without losing the characteristics of the best iberoamerican musical tradition.
It is as if Violeta Parra would have absorved the music of P.J. Harvey or Alanis Morissette. Urbina moves away from the tormented singer and from the repetitive folklore to obtain a really astounding, moving and beautiful result. The Spanish text obviously compel us to observe the work of this woman, one of the most stimulating forces of the southamerican song and of the popular music of our days since the irruption of the New Cuban Song. * “Guadalupe is built up with poetry. Her music is a verse that slashes, her figure is made of gestures, natural as the wind”.
