Details:
The Muscular Christians are a trash folk alt-country trio from New York City.

It could be said that their sound recalls the legendary Holy Modal Rounders and Michael Hurley as well as Bob Dylan and even the Pixies.

They write intense, clever, beautiful and humorous songs concerning love, loss, drunk driving, chicken-fried steak, abusive babysitters and Bill Cosby''s complete body of work.

Though skillfully masked behind a wholesome folk style, fans delight in the trio''s unusual material.

The Muscular Christians are largely unsure of its overall message and is eagerly unopposed to contradicting itself.

For the Muscular Christians, life is good these days. They have just finished Dan Marino: Important Message, an impressive debut album with 18 songs recorded by Jonathan Best, a long time David Byrne collaborator.

"The Muscular Christians wield guitars, fiddles and mandolins in folksy songs with a deeply twisted sense of humor, singing about evil baby sitters and compulsive sexuality"
-Jon Pareles, Pop and Jazz Listings, The New York Times, January 25th, 2002

"Folk songs for an age of electronic media and confusion-is-sex"
- Robert Christgau, Consumer Guide, Village Voice, January 15, 2002

"The Muscular Christians are a folk band with lyrics so postmodern they may turn
to rock ''n'' roll when they get their chops together"
- Robert Christgau, The Short List, Village Voice, January 15, 2002

"Hip-hop has MC Paul Barman, punk has Atom and His Package, and indie rock has the Moldy Peaches. In their respective genres, they are all ostensibly spoof-pop acts born out of the über-ironic and cynical 90''s. Comedy meets bohemian subpop. Perhaps every genre could use a comedian to keep it in check. Now alt country has theirs: The Muscular Christians. In conjunction with the release of Dan Marino : Important Message, The Muscular Christians will be holding a residency at CB''s Gallery Friday nights, January 11 through February 22."
- Shout Magazine, January 2002 Article title: trash folk alt country

"Muscular Christians is a weird anti-folk trio whose Dan Marino: Important Message would surely destroy the competition in any hypothetical debate over album title of the century. Boasting a sound recalling a countrified Violent Femmes, the band goofs on the very notion of meaningful song lyrics..."
-The Onion, Music Listings, January 22nd, 2002

"The Muscular Christians are singer-songwriter types musically, but are knife-twistingly poignant & disturbing lyrically. They remind us of Michael Hurley and Townes Van Zandt crossed with Palace, Bill Callahan and the Frogs! Brilliant, lovely and disturbing. Highly Recommeded."
-Terre T @ WFMU, January 4th, 2002

"Suddenly the acoustic-music denizens of the city are banding together for merriment and trouble (probably of the merry variety). This deceptively titled series is the brainchild of the Muscular Christians, a trash-folk trio that''s risen to local prominence with a show comparable to the Holy Modal Rounders'' acoustic whimsey."
- Time Out NY, January 10-17, 2002 Blurb title: Interfaith Lecture Series

"...Luna couldn''t make it, so the prime slot went to the trash-folk Muscular Christians, who uncorked some Have Moicy! covers along with yeasty originals goofing on underage drunk driving, sloppy sex, crazy make Christgau said, the difficulty of finding a decent chicken-fried steak in Houston, and, topically, child abuse. The activists loved it, maybe because of the frisson of dislocation: On Avenue B that kind of attitude is a good time, but on the Tennessee border it can get you killed."
-Josh Goldfein, The Sounds of the City, Village Voice June, 12 2000
